Abstract:: The Clara and Rudolf Kirk collection of William Dean Howells material consists of literary and visual materials by or about William Dean Howells, an American author, playwright, and literary critic. It was compiled by Clara and Rudolf Kirk, who were scholars studying Howells, circa 1940-1963. The collection includes essays and reviews written by or about Howells, correspondence and newspaper clippings by or regarding Howells, six scrapbooks about Howells' life and career, and other miscellaneous materials.

Rose and Ottilie Sutro and Nathan Twining music manuscripts of Max Bruch's Concerto for two pianos and orchestra, op. 88a, 1915-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Much of the unusual and complicated history of Max Bruch's Concerto for two pianos and orchestra, op. 88a, may be traced through this collection of music manuscripts. The collection consists primarily of full orchestral scores, duo piano parts, orchestral parts, and supplementary material for the Concerto for two pianos and orchestra, op. 88a, by Max Bruch. Also some unrelated transcriptions and arrangements. All materials are in manuscript. These materials were heavily altered and used for performance between 1915 and 1917 by duo pianists Rose and Ottilie Sutro. Subsequently, they were collected by pianist Nathan Twining from the auction of the effects of pianist Ottilie Sutro in Baltimore, MD, in 1971, and used in his reconstruction of the piece. Also included are orchestral parts prepared by Twining for his recording of the Concerto with pianist Martin Berkofsky and the London Symphony Orchestra released in 1974.

Southwell family papers on Ireland, 1662-1977 (inclusive) 1685-1715 (bulk)

Abstract:: This collection consists primarily of documents concerning government administration in Ireland during the tenures of Sir Robert Southwell (1635-1702) and his son Edward Southwell (1671-1730) as Secretaries of State for Ireland. The documents here are largely miscellaneous in nature but are clustered around a few themes. Highlights include lists of rents and financial transactions from the period after Cromwell's invasion and before the Williamite war in Ireland, a 1689 eyewitness letter recounting the battle of Derry, a series of documents related to admiralty, smuggling, and collecting maritime revenue in the first decade of the eighteenth century, an inventory of maps of Ireland, and a substantive series of petitions relating to Richard Blake of Ardfry.

Abstract:: Alfred Betts Caldwell (1900-1980) was a 1924 graduate of The Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania and an author of mystery novels. The Alfred Betts Caldwell papers are comprised primarily of Caldwell's writings, including typescripts and some of his published novels. Also there are assignments and projects undertaken 1963-1965 while completing correspondence courses with the Professional Writers School located in Westport, Connecticut, and a scrapbook kept by Caldwell from 1917 to 1936.

Harold A. Budke World War II photograph album of India, 1945-1946 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Captain Harold A. Budke was a medic in the United States Army, posted in Calcutta from 1945 to 1946. The photographs in his album document his experiences from his trip to Calcutta, to his service with the United States Army Dispensary, to his day-to-day experiences in the city, and to his work preparing the U.S.S. Marine Panther to transport GI's and patients from India in early 1946.

Louis I. Grossman papers relating to the Philadelphia Root Canal Study Club and the American Association of Endodontists, 1939-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The father of modern endodontics, an authority on root canal therapy, and a long time professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Louis I. Grossman (1907-1988) was influential in the founding of both the Philadelphia Root Canal Study Club in 1939 and the American Association of Endodontists in 1943. The collection includes correspondence and material documenting the formation of both organizations.

John Havelock Gunter notebooks, 1917-1948, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains six notebooks kept by dentist John Havelock Gunter (1888-1949) as well as some pamphlets relating to dentistry and clippings from medical journals. Gunter's notebooks, probably created while Gunter was working towards his medical degree at Temple University, contain information on pharmacology, physical diagnosis, organic chemistry and a variety of diseases and disorders.

Robert and Barbara Barlow travel photograph album of India, 1943-1945 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Robert and Barbara Barlow (Bob and Babs) traveled to India from 1943 to 1945. It is unclear from the volume if the Barlows were visiting India as a result of service during World War II or if they were traveling for pleasure. The album, titled "Street Scenes in India" provides no hints to who the Barlows were or why they were in India, but contains photographs of the various sights (both architectural and cultural) found during their stay.
