Abstract:

The Mütter Museum was founded in 1856 when Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter bequeathed his personal medical museum to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. From Thomas Mütter's collection, the museum grew as a noted repository for unique collections of medical specimens across the world. This collection of the records of the Mütter Museum span the years 1969 to 2009, although the bulk of the material dates from 1999 through 2006. The records document the educational programs of the Museum, including portrait tours, lesson plans, and the grants used to support them; two major exhibitions, "Only One Man Died" and "The Medical World of Benjamin Franklin;" and the renovations made to the Museum during the 1980s and early 2000s. Abstract:

The Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine (Wood Institute) was established in 1976 to promote to the scholarly community the rich historical resources of the College's historical library and the Mütter Museum. From its founding, the Wood Institute also took over printing and editorial duties of the College's journal, Transactions and Studies, which was published in 1793 and from 1844 to 2002. As of 2019, the Wood Institute sponsors conferences, occasional seminars, and short-term travel grants to researchers who require the resources of the museum and library. The Records of Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine (Wood Institute) date from 1979 to 2004 and are divided into three series: Administration, Programs, and Travel grants & Fellows.

Abstract:

In June 1947, Museum Curator Ella Wade wrote: "For almost one hundred years the Mutter Museum of the College of Physicians has existed with no published catalogue of its thousands of specimens. Except for listing and numbering new specimens as they were received, little was done in the way of cataloguing until 1884, when Dr. Guy Hinsdale, the curator, undertook the enormous task of compiling the first complete and compre- hensive catalogue. This consists of three large typewritten volumes. Through the years these suffered through much handling in making cor- rections and insertions, so in 1940 it was copied, giving the museum three new volumes which are also typewritten. In this first catalogue lengthy detailed descriptions are given in most instances, yet it is not a practical catalogue for use by the public, in locating desired material. In 1946 Dr. Leandro M. Abstract:

In 2010, the Office of Operations was organized to oversee hospitality, front of house and receptionist, visitor services, hall and grounds, renovations, security, and the parking lot. Previously, at least as far back as 1991, the management of facilities and special events fell under the responsibilities of the Office of Institutional Advancement (as of 2015, merged with Office of Development and External Affairs and Office of Communications into the Office of Advancement). While the Office of Operations was not organized until 2010, much of the work fell under its direct predecessor, the Office of Programs and Internal Services, or was managed under the current (2019) Director of Operations, Antonia Oberthaler. Benjamin Rush papers, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:

Benjamin Rush, Philadelphia physician, in 1745 o.s. in Byberry Township. In 1768, he received his M.D. from the University of Edinburgh. He helped to establish the Philadelphia Dispensary and was a physician there until his death. Rush was also a member of the Provincial Congress in 1776, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and, in 1777, became Surgeon General of the Continental Army. He was a Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia from 1787 to 1793. The Benjamin Rush papers date from 1787 to 1889, although the bulk of the material spans the years 1796 to 1810. These papers document some of Rush's work with patients through invoices, receipts of bills paid, and correposndence; as well as Rush's notes on various medical topics, including the liver.
