Abstract:

Allen R. Myers was born in Baltimore on January 14, 1935. He graduated from University of Pennsylvania and received his M.D. from University of Maryland in 1960; his medical specialties were Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. He spent the majority of his career in academia and was elected College President in 2000 and served two terms. Myers died in January 2020. This collection dates from 1999-2003, and documents Allen Myers' time as College President. It contains correspondence, committee meeting reports and documents, information related to College Fellowship, information relating to building restoration projects and facility usage during the presidency, reports from the president and executive director, two public health programs, and press releases from the College.

Abstract:

Joseph Gibbons Richardson was born in Philadelphia in 1836. He earned his M.D. in 1862 from the University of Pennsylvania, and later was a lecturer on pathological anatomy and professor of hygiene. Richardson is best known for his contributions to the field of medical microscopy. He died in Philadelphia in 1886. The Joseph G. Richardson papers date from 1862 to 1887, and document Richardson's professional career as a physician in 19th-century Philadelphia, including letters to and from colleagues, his publications, and lectures given. The collection is divided into five series: Biographical information; Clippings; Correspondence; Daybook; and Writings. Previously catalogued as 10a 338.

Lester Lovett Powell was born in 1875 in either Saco or Biddeford, Maine. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1905. Letters from Fellows requesting Library privileges for non-Fellows, 1870-1951; 1975; undated (inclusive) 1910-1940 (bulk)

Abstract:

Established in 1788, the Library of the College of Physicians served as Philadelphia's central medical library for over 150 years, serving medical schools, hospitals, physicians and other health professionals. Today, it is an independent research library devoted to the history of medicine and serves hundreds of scholars, health professionals, students and popular writers each year. The Letters from Fellows requesting Library privileges for non-Fellows collection spans the years 1870 to 1974, although many years are not represented, and the bulk of the correspondence dates from 1910 to 1940. Included in this collection are letters of recommendation and signed business cards written by College Fellows to introduce non-Fellows to the College Library, and ask permission for the non-Fellows to use the Library. Abstract:

John Redman Coxe was born in 1773 in Trenton, N.J. and died in Philadelphia in 1864. He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1794. Coxe held the positions of Professor of Chemistry (1809-1818) and Professor of Materia Medica and Pharmacy (1818-1835) at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a strong advocate of vaccination and one of the first to practice this new preventive method in Philadelphia. The Coxe family papers is a small collection dating from 1857 to 1869, containing mostly correspondence and wills. Previously catalogued as 10c 83.

Abstract:

The Section on Otology and Laryngology (later Otolaryngology) was established December 12, 1893, under Section 1 of the Rules Governing Sections. The original Executive Committee of the Section included J. Solis Cohen, Charles Burnett, and B. Alexander Randall. Its first meeting was held December 20, 1893, where Harrison Allen was elected as Chairman and Charles Burnett as Clerk. The Section continued to meet on the first Tuesday of every month. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Otolaryngology. This collection contains material related to the Alfonso Corti centenary celebration, held November 21, 1951. It was collected and compiled by Douglas Macfarlan. Alfonso (1822-1876) Corti received his medical degree at Vienna in 1847 under the supervision of professor Josef Hyrtl, with a thesis on the bloodstream system of a reptile.
