Abstract:

The Building Committee, first active between 1861 and 1864, and again between 1904 and circa 1911, was re-established in October 1948 to discuss and plan for Library-secific building work, notably reading room renovations, a new heating system, and an addition to the stacks. This small collection, dating from 1948 to 1956, documents the work of the Committee, and includes meeting minutes, correspondence, contracts with vendors, and mailers oncerning the project sent to College Fellows.

Reports of the Section on Public Health, Preventive, and Industrial Medicine, 1946-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Section on Industrial Medicine and Public Health was established by the Council and President of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia on 4 April 1917, at the request of thirty Fellows, including John B. Deaver, G, E. De Schweinitz, William W. Keen, John B. Roberts, and Alfred Stengel. The work of the Section was purely scientific and intended to present programs on matters of public and industrial health concerns, In 1923, the name of the Section was changed to the Section on Public Health and Industrial Medicine; in 1935 or 1936, a more inclusive name, the Section on Public Health, Preventive and Industrial Medicine, was adopted. Due to declining membership, the Section was disbanded in February 1971. This small collection consists of annual reports created by the Section for the years 1946-1955.

B. McDaniel in 1973; and visitor logs dating from 1895 to 1953.

George B. Gordon Director's Office Records, 1910-1928 (bulk) 1907-1930 (inclusive)

Abstract:

George Byron Gordon, explorer in Central America and Alaska, and first to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, was born in New Perth, Prince Edward Island, Canada on August 4,1870. Gordon attended the University of South Carolina for one year in 1888 then completed his degree at Harvard University. Selected as an assistant to John G. Owens in 1892, Gordon accompanied Owens on the Harvard-sponsored excavation at Copan, Honduras. When Owens died in the field, Gordon was given the leadership to close down that portion of the work and then continued as Director of the next six sessions in Copan, until 1900. While performing these duties, Gordon attained his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1894. Gordon joined the Free Museum of Science and Art(later the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology)in 1903 as Assistant Curator in the Section of General Ethnology. Martin Biddle was the Director of the University Museum from 1978 to 1981. In addition, he served as a Professor in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania. His administrative records consist of forty archival boxes of correspondence, administrative memos and reports and material related to exhibitions. The records are in two series; alphabetical and chronological.
