Abstract:

Josiah White was a 19th-century engineer and the inventor of a method to bring coal down the Lehigh River, a tributary of the Delaware River in Pennsylvania. He was also heavily involved in the education of many among America's less privileged, establishing a number of manual labor schools in the Midwest. The collection includes White's business and personal papers, as well as the papers of Hannah White Richardson and Rebecca White, his daughters, whose interests included religious and community affairs.

The Female Society of Philadelphia for the Relief and Employment of the Poor records, 1795-1978 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Female Society of Philadelphia for the Relief and Employment of the Poor was established in 1795 by Quaker Anne Parrish. The society's original mission was to provide relief and an opportunity for improvement in quality of life for women widowed by the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1793. The Female Society opened the House of Industry, where women were employed to sew and weave. The House of Industry was the Female Society's main focus until 1949, when new opportunities for women had begun to open. The sewing room closed and was replaced by the Friends House for Older People, which provided work and a social gathering for elderly members of the community. This eventually became the Philadelphia Senior Center. The collection includes mostly administrative records, as well as pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and photographs from major gatherings and events. Abstract:

Rufus Matthew Jones (1863-1948) was a Quaker historian, mystic, and philosopher. Born in South China, Maine, to Edwin and Mary Gifford Hoxie Jones, he taught philosophy at Haverford College between 1893 and 1934, and was involved in the Haverford Emergency Unit, American Friends Service, and Fellowship of Reconciliation, and is often attributed as having helped to unite Yearly Meetings in the United States. The collection consists of Rufus Jones' correspondence, diaries, financial papers, manuscripts, Haverford College class notes, short talks, photographs, medals and artifacts and material relating to Jones. In addition, there are the correspondence and photographs of Elizabeth Bartram Cadbury Jones, his wife, and of Mary Hoxie Jones, his daughter. Abstract:

In 1883, Quakers Albert Keith Smiley and his brother Daniel Smiley organized the first annual conference to discuss assistance to Native Americans at their estate at Lake Mohonk in New York state. These conferences were widely attended by specialists in various fields, as well as important officials. Only later were Native Americans represented. The concern to "uplift" was also directed at Filipino, Hawaiian, African American and Puerto Rican peoples, though attention at the conferences was primarily focused on Native Americans.
