Abstract:: In 1974, the American Law Institute began a new series of studies of federal income tax problems. The Federal Income Tax Project comprised a number of studies, including those of Subchapter C, Subchapter K, and Subchapter J of the Internal Revenue Code; a study of international taxation; and a study of generation-skipping transfers. The collection, 1974-1999, includes correspondence, meeting minutes, drafts, memoranda, commentary, and related materials concerning various tax-related projects conducted by the ALI from 1974 to present.

Abstract:: The "Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution: Analysis and Recommendations" was the American Law Institute's first comprehensive work in the field of family law. The project as a whole comprises six principal parts: Child Custody; Child Support; Division of Property at Dissolution; Compensatory Payments (formerly known as alimony); Domestic Partners; and Agreements. The collection includes correspondence, meeting materials, drafts, grant material, project proposal material, and other records related to the Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution project, published in 2002. This collection spans the years 1985 to 2000.

Federal Judicial Code Revision Project records, 1995-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Federal Judicial Code Revision Project is the Institute's third major work on the jurisdiction of the federal courts. In 1969, the American Law Institute published its Study of the Division of Jurisdiction Between State and Federal Courts. In 1994 it finished work on the Complex Litigation Project and published Complex Litigation: Statutory Recommendations and Analysis. This work reconsiders three subjects within Title 28 of the United States Code: supplemental jurisdiction, venue, and removal.

Transnational Insolvency Project records, 1991-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The North American Free Trade Agreement has stimulated a large increase in economic activity that crosses the Canadian, Mexican, and United States borders. Inevitably, this has resulted in an increase in the number of bankruptcies in which creditors and assets are located in more than one of the NAFTA countries. The American Law Institute's (ALI's) Transnational Insolvency: Cooperation Among the NAFTA Countries arose in response to this increasing number of bankruptcies of multinational economic enterprises. The Project's eventual goal was to develop principles and procedures for managing the general default of an economic enterprise having its center of interest in a NAFTA country and having assets, creditors, and operations in more than one NAFTA country. The collection, 1991-1997, includes drafts and related materials pertaining to the creation of international statements for United States Bankruptcy Law, Canadian Bankruptcy Law, and Mexican Bankruptcy Law.

American Law Institute Annual Meeting records, 1923-2005 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The American Law Institute (ALI) was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American law. Former Penn Law Dean William Draper Lewis was the Institute's first director, running the organization's operations out of his campus office. The ALI was conceived as a representative gathering of the American Bar (including Judges, Lawyers, and Law Professors) for the stated mission "to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaptation to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work." To that end, the ALI has held annual meetings since its inception to adopt its restatements and other codification projects, discuss drafts, analyze pending legislation and aspects of the law, set policy, and initialize new projects. Deborah A. DeMott papers (Restatement (Third) of Agency), 1994-2007 and undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: Deborah A. DeMott completed her B.A. in 1970 from Swarthmore College and received her Juris Doctorate from New York University in 1973. DeMott spent her early years in DuBois, Pennsylvania. She served as articles editor of the New York University Law Review. DeMott began her professional career with a judicial clerkship in a federal court in New York City, and later practiced with a large law firm in that city, until she joined the Duke law faculty in 1975. In 1989, she received the Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award from Duke University. Professor DeMott served as the Reporter for the American Law Institute's Restatement (Third) of Agency, published in 2006. This collection includes materials such as correspondence, financial material, notes, printed materials, and council and preliminary drafts of the Restatement of the Law Third.

Bernard G. Segal papers, 1910-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Bernard G. Segal graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1931. Segal became the youngest Deputy Attorney General in Pennsylvania's history in 1932, the first Jewish lawyer elected Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 1952, and the first Jewish president of the American Bar Association in 1969. Segal also co-chaired the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and headed the Office of Economic Opportunity's Advisory Committee on Legal Services to the Poor. The Bernard G. Segal papers document all of Segal's activities outside of his work as a lawyer at Schnader, Harrison, Segal, and Lewis. This includes correspondence, reports, and minutes from his professional associations, governmental appointments, and his civic work.

A. Leo Levin Papers, 1935-1996 (inclusive)

Abstract:: A. Leo Levin, born in 1919 received his B.A. from Yeshiva University in 1939. He attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School and received his J.D. in 1942. Levin then took his first teaching job at the University of Iowa where he taught for two years before returning to his alma mater Penn Law School. Levin taught at Penn Law until his appointment as Director of the Federal Judicial Center in 1977. Levin participated in numerous legal professional organizations such as the American Bar Association, the Association of American Law Schools and the Order of the Coif. Levin also served on a number of high profile judiciary committees such as the Legislative Reapportionment Committee from 1971-1973, the Commission on Revision of the Federal Court Appellate System from 1973-1975, and the Civil Justice Reform Act Advisory Group. Penn Law School Legal Oral History Project Files, 1999-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Penn Law School Legal Oral History Project was a collaborative effort from 1999 through 2006 by a team of faculty, librarians, and students to record and preserve first-person narratives of graduates and members of the Penn Law Community as well as notable public interest lawyers. The project began as a seminar, the goal of which was to train students in the theory and practice of oral history. Each student then selected a distinguished graduate or member of the Penn Law community and conducted a one-to-two hour videotaped interview. Following the interview, the student transcribed the videotape and prepared a biographical article. The collection, dated 1999-2006, includes transcripts of interviews of distinguished Penn Law School alumni, associated members of the Penn Law community, and public interest lawyers.
