Sammlung Hogarthischer Kupferstiche (William Hogarth images, engraved by Riepenhausen), 1794 (inclusive)

Extent:: 9 volumes
Abstract:: Between 1794 and 1834, the printer Joh. Christ. Dieterich published in Göttingen a set of volumes called Ausfürliche Erklärung der Hogarthischen Kupferstiche. It included included twelve volumes of images by the English painter and egraver William Hogarth, along with popular commentaries on the images written by Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, a local Physics professor. This collection is comprised of nine of the twelve graphic volumes. The plates are "good copies" of Hogarth's originals by the German engraver Ernst Riepenhausen.

Abstract:: The Days' Doings was a sensationalist illustrated newspaper published in London from 1870 to 1872. The four issues of The Days' Doings held by Penn's Rare Book and Manuscript Library were collected because each contains an article by Mark Twain. The issues are bound together in a single folio volume with brown paper covers.

James Joyce ephemera collection, 1977-2002 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Irish writer James Joyce (1882-1941) published only five literary works in his lifetime--Dubliners, Exiles, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegan's Wake--but his intellectual and cultural influence has been enormous. The articles and pamphlets here chronicle his presence in academic life, popular media, and the arts during the second half of the 20th century.

Sydney S. Keil collection of Latin Americana, 1615-1863 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Sydney S. Keil Collection of Latin Americana contains broadsides and other printed material from Latin America dating from the 17th to 19th centuries with the majority dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries. The majority of these items were printed in Mexico, but the collection also includes material printed in Spain, Peru, and Columbia. The collection is particularly strong in printed novenas and other devotional work, as well as government decrees and laws.

Belle Époque musical concert and opera programs and periodicals collection, 1897-1914 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Belle Époque, dating from the end of the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 to the outbreak of World War I in 1914, is described as a period of optimism, regional peace, economic prosperity, and techonological, scientific, and cultural innovations during the French Third Republic. It is particularly known as an era in which the arts flourished in Paris and other European Francophone centers. This collection contains programs, publications, advertisements and tickets which document classical music and operatic performances at a variety of concert venues and music halls.

Frederick P. Lee collection of World War I ephemera, 1914-1919 (inclusive)

Extent:: 0.33 linear feet (1 box)
Abstract:: Frederick P. Lee, an insurance agent, was born in 1880, in England. He immigrated to the United States in 1912 and lived in Santa Monica, California. A number of materials in this collection, including pamphlets and magazines, are stamped with the phrase, "With Compliments of Frederick P. Lee, Fellow of Royal Colonial Institute." As an Englishman living in the US during World War I, it is likely that Lee was interested in promoting England's role in the war and even encouraging US participation, since the US did not enter the war until 1917. The materials in this collection would have been part of that promotion/propaganda effort. This World War I collection includes magazines, serials, pamphlets, newspapers, maps, and postcards dated from 1914-1918. Most items are printed in England and concern England's role in the war.

Abstract:: The Common Press is the letterpress printing studio at the University of Pennsylvania and was founded at the University of Pennsylvania on January 17, 2006, the 300th anniversary of Benjamin Franklin's birth. It was conceived as an interdisciplinary project by Kelly Writers House (a writer-centered community founded at the University of Pennsylvania in 1995); the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts; and the University of Pennsylvania Fine Arts program, to create an environment encouraging collaboration among students with an emphasis on working among digital and analog design, writing, and image making. Projects included in this collection, dated 1998 to 2016, consist of broadsides, posters, flyers, postcards, cards, and chapbooks, and were created using a variety of printing processes and techniques.

American and British ballads, circa 18th-19th centuries (inclusive)

Abstract:: Broadside ballads are single sheets of paper printed on one side with song lyrics. These ballads were about love, religion, legends, current events, etc. and were printed and circulated in large quantities. They were popular from the 16th through the 19th centuries in England, Ireland, and North America.
