Alma A. Clarke was an American who volunteered in World War I helping French orphans through the Committee France-America for the Protection of the Children of the Frontier and as a Red Cross Auxiliary Nurse in the American Red Cross Military Hospital No. 1 in Neuilly-sur-Seine. The Alma A. Clarke papers provide an in depth view into a World War I nurse's memories and views on her service in France. For the most complete view of Clarke's experiences in France, a researcher should first examine the "Scrapbooks." The Woman's Club of Germantown records document the efforts of clubwomen to engage in community and civic life in Germantown, Pennsylvania from 1917 to 1982. The collection houses meeting minutes; committee, financial and other administrative records; scrapbooks and photograph albums; and records of the Woman's Club of Germantown Juniors.

Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women records, 1916-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women (PCAW) was founded in 1916 by sixteen women advertising executives. The Club participated in charitable efforts, offered advertising courses, published a newsletter (Ad-Land News), and hosted social events throughout its history. These efforts garnered national recognition for PCAW as a leading advertising organization. It also won them recognition locally as an organization committed to helping the community through scholarships and charitable giving. This collection contains the records produced by PCAW from 1916 to 1984, including material related to their advertising courses, events, history, charity involvement, and meetings. The collection has several strengths, the most notable of which is its comprehensive coverage of organizational activities from 1930 to 1977. Claud Lovat Fraser and Grace Crawford Lovat Fraser collections, 1906-1923 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Claud Lovat Fraser was born in London on May 15, 1890 to Florence Margaret Fraser, an amateur artist, and Claud Fraser, a city solicitor. He became a clerk at his father's law firm but left in 1911 to seriously pursue art. In 1914, Fraser enlisted with the Inns of Court Officer Training Corps and was quickly commissioned to the 14th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry. He suffered from poor health and was eventually discharged in 1919. In 1916, he met Grace Crawford and the two were married on February 6, 1917. Miss Crawford was born in Paris in 1889, daughter of Theron Clark Crawford, an American entrepreneur, and a highly trained amateur pianist. During the four years after their marriage, until Fraser's death in 1921, the two worked jointly on a number of theatre projects and had one daughter, Helen Catherine Adeline Lovat Fraser, born in 1918. Abstract:
Karl Detlev Jessen (1872-1919) was a professor of German Literature at Bryn Mawr College from 1910 to 1919. He was involved with the Socialist movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Karl D. Jessen papers house the records of Karl D. Jessen. This collection dates from 1872 to 1980, with bulk dates of 1890 to 1917. This collection consists mostly of correspondence between Jessen and his family, friends, and colleagues, in addition to manuscripts and manuscript drafts, clippings, scrapbooks, bibliography cards of Jessen's research, and other ephemera.

F. Furman Betts papers, 1917-1919, 1997, 1998

This collection contains the letters and photographs of Germantown resident F. Furman Betts, who served overseas with the American Friends Reconstruction Unit of the American Friends Service Committee in association with the American Red Cross during World War I. Additionally, there are newspapers and other ephemera that he collected, a small diary from his time aboard the Rochambeau and his first few days in Europe, and collections of excerpts from Betts's letters and memorabilia by Richard F. Betts, 1997 and 1998.

Edward James Baker letters, 1918-1925 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Edward J. Baker was a soldier in the US Army during World War I (private, Company F, 145th Infantry, 37th Division, AEF). The bulk of the collection consists primarily of correspondence wherein Baker writes home to family during and shortly after the war. Baker was stationed at Camp Lee, Virginia, then in France and Belgium. He apparently saw combat, although he does not write about the fighting directly. The letters are mostly routine but include interesting tidbits about life in the army, his experiences in France, popular culture, and other related topics of the day. Also included are a photo of Baker in uniform, a few postcards and ephemera, and his discharge certificate.

Karl Oscar Hugg papers, 1915-1994 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection primarily consists of 187 photographs that document Karl Oscar Hugg’s activities as a World War I pilot for Germany. Before and after the war he studied to be an opera singer, and two concert programs for events he sang at are included. In 1923, Hugg immigrated to the United States, where he worked as a tool and die maker. In 1942 he was faced with possible denaturalization over some pro-German statements he made. The collection includes news clippings from his denaturalization trial in 1942 to 1943, as well as other biographical information.
