Brooks Family Papers, 1790-1992 (bulk 1832-1960) (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Brooks Family Papers contain extensive correspondence, diaries, and other papers from multiple generations of the Buck, Butler, and Brooks families of New England and the Mid-West and the Kerner family of Delaware. Prominently represented are Morgan Brooks (1861-1947), a professor of engineering, and his wife, Frona Marie (Brooks) Brooks (1861-1947). One of their children, Charles Franklin Brooks (1891-1958), became a member of the Society of Friends shortly after marrying Eleanor M. Stabler (1892-1986) in 1914. Their daughter, Barbara Brooks (1922-2007), married Edward H. Kerner, and she was active in Quaker concerns, particularly peace. Also included in this collection are business, legal, genealogical, and professional papers of family members.

Abstract:
The Aimwell School in Philadelphia was founded in 1796 by Anne Parrish (1760-1800) for the purpose of providing "a good English education" in the primary and grammar grades for underprivileged girls. It was instituted by the Society for the Free Instruction of Female Children and operated under the management of the Society of Friends.

Speer Family papers, 1802-1982 (inclusive) 1883-1943 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Speer Family papers represent four generations of that family, with the bulk of material attributed to the last two generations, especially Robert Elliott Speer and his wife and three of his five children: Emma Bailey, Elliott, Margaret Bailey, and William Speer. The family was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving that institution in a variety of different capacities. The children, in addition to their religious roles, held prominent positions in academic administration. The family's papers primarily consist of the personal papers of the family, although they also contain the professional correspondence of Emma Bailey and Margaret Bailey Speer, both Bryn Mawr College alumnae. This collection, which dates from 1802 to 1982, contains letters, diaries, speeches, publications, awards, and photographs, although the vast majority of the material is the letters between family members.

Abstract:
Contains the papers of the Stabler family of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Greenwich, Ct., and their collateral lines. The collection spans six generations of a Quaker family and includes diaries, daybooks, albums, pictures, and voluminous correspondence concerned primarily with family issues. Louisa Merritt Field (1826-1914) married Edward Hartshorne Stabler (1813-1877) in 1859. He was the son of Edward Stabler (1769-1831), an Alexandria, Virginia, druggist, by his second wife, Mary Hartshorne. They had three children: Mary Cope (1862-69), Edward Lincoln Stabler (1865-1959) who married Elizabeth Tubby, and Louise M. Stabler (1868-1954) who married George Howard Parker. Louisa M. Field was the daughter of Richard Field and Deborah Merritt Field of New York Monthly Meeting. Her father built the house on Willow Street, Brooklyn, in 1838, and the house remained in the family until 1922 when Edward H. and Louisa Stabler's son, Edward L. The Dorcassian Society of Burlington, New Jersey was founded in 1839, and appears to have dissolved at the end of the minute book, in 1860. The mission of the Dorcassion Society was to provide relief work to the poor, in particular clothing. This collection is comprised of one volume of minutes and attendence lists from 1843 - 1860.

The Female Anti-Slavery Sewing Society's mission was to: "We organise ourselves a Sewing Society, for the purpose of relieving the sufferings of that class of our countrymen, who have fled from the oppression which they endured under the unjust laws of our country, and found a refuge in Canada." The minutes do not indicate location, founding or ending dates for the Society. The collection includes one book from 1852 - 1854 which begins with the mission of the society, and otherwise includes informal minutes, listings for material and financial donations given by memberships, and the number of people at each meeting.
