Abstract:
This collection includes various business correspondence, including a letter and testimony by John Comly encouraging changes in the Quaker discipline regarding marriage. Also contained are extracts of minutes from Abington Quarterly Meeting discussing marriage, a letter from George M. Justice to his sons, and a hymn printed in raised type for the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind. Also included are unsigned writings on the subjects of a possible war between the U.S. and France and public education.

Abstract:
Contains correspondence concerning the gift of Dr. John Unthank of Limerick, Ireland, of £1,000, to be divided between two concerns: first, to the Ohio, Indiana and Baltimore Yearly Meetings to be applied by them through their Indian committees toward promoting the so-called civilization and Christian instruction of Native Americans; and, secondly£250 each to Indiana and Ohio Yearly Meetings toward establishing boarding schools for the children of members. Samuel Parsons of New York Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) served as agent in distributing the funds.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Education Committees (1833-1974), 1833-1976 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Committee on Education of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends acts primarily as an advisory and consultative body. It has various funds at its disposal for use in assisting Friends schools and individual Quakers in the Yearly Meeting. An Education Committee was first appointed by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1833 to survey the state of education within its limits. Hicksites and Orthodox Friends subsequently named a sucession of subroups on education and libraries until the 1870's when both branches formed more permanent committees. In 1950, the Hicksites joined with the Orthodox to merge their respective groups into a Joint Committee on Education, before the actual reunification of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1955. The records of the committees include minutes, Executive Committee minutes, and Extension Committee minutes. Also includes records of the Mary Jeanes Loan Committee and the Anne P. Townsend Fund.

Friends World College Records, 1958-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Friends World College was conceived as an accredited, co-educational, degree-granting liberal arts college combining a residence program with the opportunity for foreign travel and study. Planned as a "college without walls," it was sponsored by the New York Yearly Meeting and opened in September 1965. The College flourished in the 1960s counterculture environment, but ran into financial difficulties in the 1970s. While much of its support came from Quakers, in 1975 it became officially non-sectarian. It was merged into Long Island University in 1991. The collection contains the records of Friends World College, 1958-1992, compiled for New York Yearly Meeting by George Nicklin; correspondence and legal papers concerning the transfer and sale of assets and the resulting lawsuits; topical files of George Nicklin; and his records on Pax Amicus, the group which opposed the merger and loss of College assets.
