Abstract:: Graceanna Lewis (1821-1912) was a published scholar, naturalist, lecturer, abolitionist and social reformer. This collection contains research and lecture notes on a variety of topics including: botany, ornithology, crystallography, mineralogy, zoology, ichthyology, embryology, neurology, and chemistry. There are botanical illustrations, leaf and ornithology charts, prints and sketches depicting the classification of the animal and plant kingdoms, and botanical sketches on wood blocks. In addition to scientific notes, there are notes and lectures depicting her views on the abolition of slavery, women's equality, and the force of nature and its place in the universe.

Abstract:: Founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1824, in honor of America's first scientist, Benjamin Franklin, The Franklin Institute is one of the oldest and most important science institutes in the nation. Its mission is to inspire a passion for learning about science and technology. The Historical and Interpretive Collections of The Franklin Institute photograph and negatives collection, circa 1860-1990s, includes small collections of photographs and photograph albums as well as other photographic materials collected by The Franklin Institute over time. The materials consist of images related to science, industry and technology, engineering, transportation, and other related topics. There are also portrait, landscape, and aerial images. The collection includes prints, negatives, slides, and some early forms of photographs, including talbotypes/calotypes and albumen prints. Some photographs are oversized.

Sherman Frankel papers, 1942-2008 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection comprises materials written by or otherwise related to Sherman Frankel (1922-2019), a particle physicist who was a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Radiation Laboratory, a graduate student at the University of Illinois, and finally a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Most of Frankel's writing is devoted to what he termed International Security and Arms Control/Physics and Public Policy ("ISAAC/PAPP"). Specifically, much of his mature work is devoted to theorizing and debating post-launch controls (PLCs) for nuclear weapons.

Abstract:: This collection contains publications and photographs pertaining primarily to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Radiation Laboratory and its personnel. The creator of this collection, Robert M. Thrall (1914-2006), headed the Radiation Lab's Group 91.5 of Division 9, Airborne Systems, which developed radar for airborne bombing and navigation, from 1944 to 1945.

Abstract:: David Rockwell Goddard (1908-1985) was a plant physiologist, educator, and provost of the University of Pennsylvania. The collection includes papers related to Goddard's work on several panels, including the Life Sciences Panel; the Commission on Narcotics and Drug Addiction; the Pesticide Panel of the Federal Council for Science and Technology; and the National Academy of Sciences Advisory Committee on the USSR and Eastern Europe. Materials include reports, memoranda, newsletters, pamphlets, meetings minutes and newspaper clippings.

The Papers of Max Bredig, 1889-1978 (inclusive) 1925-1965 (bulk)

Abstract:: The Papers of Max Bredig contain manuscripts, photographs, publications, and artifacts which were created or collected by Max Bredig. The collection documents Max's early life and career in Germany and contains a large amount of family and personal correspondence. The personal correspondence shifts to predominantly professional correspondence after he immigrated to the United States in 1933. Max's career as a physical chemist at the Vanadium Corporation of America and later the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is well documented among these papers. This collection is an addendum to the Papers of Georg and Max Bredig located at the Science History Institute.

Abstract:: The Melvin Benarde papers collection is a set of typescript drafts of books written and edited by Melvin Benarde. Benarde is the author of ten books on the topic of humanity's effect on the environment and a professor in the Graduate Program in Industrial Hygiene at Temple University, the Department of Community Medicine at Hahnemann Medical School, and the Environmental Studies Institute at Drexel University. The typescripts are annotated, some heavily and some with copy edits and instructions to typesetters. Titles include Race Against Famine, Our Precarious Habitat, Disinfection, and The Chemicals we Eat.
