Abstract:: Elizabeth A.W. (Betty) Furnas was an active member of the Society of Friends who served as a member of the Board of Pendle Hill and was a member of the Women's Problems Group of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and its sucessor, Philadelphia Quaker Women. The collection includes minutes and correspondence, particularly of the latter, as well as published and unpublished writings and other material.

John W. Nason Papers, 1927-1965 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In June 1940 at the age of thirty-five, John W. Nason (1905-2001) became the eighth president of Swarthmore College. A strong proponent of the Honors Program, he continued the mission of academic excellence established by Frank Aydelotte while adapting the campus to the pressures of World War. The first series of this collection, 1927-1965, contains John W.Nason's official correspondence and correspondence with faculty. There is also one box of reports collected by Nason's Vice President James A. Perkins, 1944-1946, received as a separate records transfer. Series B, Personal Papers, 1939-1948, includes correspondence received as a separate donation.

Anna Wharton Morris Papers, 1729-1957 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Anna Wharton Morris was the youngest daughter of Joseph Wharton, prominent Philadelphia industrialist and philanthropist. She was a birthright member of the Society of Friends, active in prison reform and other social reform movements of her day, and was a profilic writer, primarily of short stories and essays. In 1896, she married Harrison S. Morris, Philadelphia author and arts administrator, and they had one child, Catharine Morris Wright. The collection includes her diaries and journals, maintained almost continuously from 1884 to 1956, correspondence received, her manuscript writings, and other miscellaneous materials. Of particular interest is material on the prison reform movement, particularly the correspondence of Thomas Mott Osborne. Other correspondents include Emily Sartain, Thomas Wallace Swann, J. Richardson-Yarnall family papers, 1722-1962 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains personal papers, primarily correspondence, of members of the Richardson and Yarnall families, Pennsylvania Quakers who emigrated to America in the 1680s. The families were united by the marriage in 1816 of Nathaniel Richardson and Hannah Yarnall of Byberry. Of special significance are the diaries of Quaker ministers Peter Yarnall (1754-1798) and his second wife, Hannah Haines Thornton Yarnall (1765-1822) and their correspondence with family and fellow ministers. The papers reflect the daily life and concerns of members of two prominent families in southeastern Pennsylvania from the 18th through much of the 20th centuries.

Association for the Care of Colored Orphans Records, 1822-1979 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Association for the Care of Colored Orphans, also known as "The Shelter," was founded in Philadelphia by Quaker women in 1822 to care for black orphans, both boys and girls, within a nurturing, home-like environment. In 1915, it relocated to Cheyney, Pa, and became a home for girls. In 1965, its name was changed to "Friends Shelter for Girls," and its mission evolved to serve as a home for teenaged girls. In 1981 it ceased to function as a group home and was succeeded by Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children which functioned as an emergency shelter.

Female Association of Philadelphia for the Relief of the Sick and Infirm Poor with Clothing Records, 1828-1978 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Female Association of Philadelphia for the Relief of the Sick and Infirm Poor with Clothing was a Quaker charity founded in 1828 to distribute clothing and provide other assistance to the sick and poor of Philadelphia. It went out of existence in 1975.

Ozone Club records, 1901-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Ozone Club was a golf association for Quaker men in the Philadelphia area. It was established in 1901 and included in its membership the presidents of Swarthmore College and prominent Quakers. The Niblick Club which was set-off from the Ozone Club in the 1920s, also was a men's golf association with Quaker membership. The Ozone Club records include minute books, correspondence and miscellaneous papers. A small amount of records from the Niblick Club is also included with the collection, including annual meeting programs and photos.
