Longstreth-Noble Family Papers, 1735-1980 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Longstreth family were Pennsylvania Quakers who married into the Cook and Noble families. Thomas B. Longstreth (1796-1867) was a Philadelphia building contractor who married Lydia Noble (1803-1879), and both were active members of Green Street Monthly Meeting. Lydia was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Tompkins) Noble, members of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, Northern District. Samuel Noble was a successful tanner. The collection includes Longstreth family correspondence, extensive financial papers concerning the Noble and Longstreth properties and estates in Philadelphia, photographs, and scrapbooks concerning Walter C. and Emily Longstreth and Edith Longstreth Wood. Samuel Noble, a Philadelphia tanner, and subsequent generations owned property in the Spring Garden and Northern Liberties sections of Philadelphia, Pa., and in Camden, N.J., and the collection includes deeds, agreements, and other papers concerning these properties.

Morgan Bunting Genealogical Research Papers, ca. 1710-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Morgan Bunting (1863-1929) was a member of the Society of Friends in Darby, Pa., and a descendant of Samuel Bunting (1692-1759) who emigrated from England in the early eighteenth century. An architect by occupation, Bunting had an avid interest in Darby history and genealogy. The collection includes correspondence and genealogical papers concerning the Sellers, Cadwallader, Bartram, and Coleman families. There are also some original documents concerning the Bunting family, including deeds, wills, and an acknowledgment of Samuel Bunting to the Darby Monthly Meeting (1755), as well as a letter from William Poole to Edward Garrigues, 1825.

Harvey Family Papers, 1851-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Dorothy Harvey Leonard was a nurse and family historian until her death in 2007. The collection includes Leonard's own writings as well as family manuscripts, photographs and other memorabilia. Also includes material from her sister, Ruth Harvey Mavronikolas, and extensive genealogical material compiled by her cousin, Kathaleen Johnson Carter. The Harvey family descends through Jesse Harvey, the son of Michael and Elizabeth, who was married to Keziah Ward in Center Monthly Meeting, NC, in 1786. Related families include Carter, Tregelles, Thorp, Palmer, Sharpless, Hampton, and many others.

Abstract:: Joanna Wharton Lippincott (1858-1938) was the eldest daughter of Joseph Wharton, prominent Philadelphia Quaker businessman and philanthropist. She was a lifelong Quaker and served on the Board of Managers of Swarthmore College. The collection consists primarily of family correspondence, and the majority of the correspondence is from Anna Lovering Wharton, her mother.

Darlington Family Papers, 1831-2012 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains the papers of the Darlington family of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and Woodstown, New Jersey. Quakers with strong ties to Swarthmore College, the family was involved in education, social and peace concerns, and businesses in the Philadelphia area. Charles J. Darlington (1894-1966) served as Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends during the reunification of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings. The collection includes family correspondence relating to the Darlington, Shortlidge, Gause, and Palmer families as well as genealogical research and 20th century Quaker activities.

"The Trail of Life in the Middle Years", 1934 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The manuscript of Rufus M. Jones, entitled "The Trail of Life in the Middle Years," is the third volume in an autobiographical series, of which the two preceding volumes are: "Finding the Trail of Life" and "The Trail of Life in College." The narrative begins in the year 1893, when Jones became the editor of "The Friends Review" and began teaching philosophy at Haverford College. In it, he discusses the state of the Society of Friends at the time, and discusses his personal reconciliation of past Quaker separations, particularly during his time as the editor of "The Friends Review."

Wilmer J. and Mildred Binns Young Papers, 1909-2014 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Wilmer J. Young (1887-1983), a Quaker teacher and peace activist born in Iowa, was involved in post World War I reconstruction in France and Poland. He married Mildred Binns in 1922, and together they worked with AFSC work camps and cooperative farms until he began to teach at Pendle Hill in 1955. The collection contains primarily journals and correspondence from his time in France.

Collection of Rufus Jones papers, 1894-1947? (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection includes letters and printed materials relating to Rufus Jones. Included are photocopies of letters commenting on or criticizing The American Friend of which Rufus Jones was editor. Among these are a letter from Henry Stanley Neuman, editor of The Friend, regarding the state of the Society in England, and a letter from Walter Malone relating events at Ohio Yearly Meeting in 1894. Letters from R.L. Kelly, Joseph Moore, David Hadley, and Thomas Newlin discuss The American Friend, Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, and Quaker doctrine. A letter from J. Rendel Harris presents an issue of Biblical translation. Also included are drafts of Jones' article, Are We Ready, letters concerning its release, and Richmond P. Miller's introduction to the publication, On Your Marks! Get Set! Various personal letters to Rufus Jones and a transcript copy of his remarks at Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, entitled We Must Help Answer Our Prayers, are also included.
