Abstract:: Gilbert Cope (1840-1928) was a well-known Quaker genealogist and local historian who compiled comprehensive genealogical records of Pennsylvania families. Cope was one of the founders of the Chester County Historical Society and served it as secretary, director, and honorary director. He was a member of the Friends’ Historical Association and a corresponding member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the New England Historic Genealogical Society. In 1912, he was elected an honorary member of the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania and became one of its honorary vice presidents in 1924. Additionally, he served as president of the Pennsylvania Federation of Historical Societies from 1911 to 1912, overseeing 75 historical organizations in Pennsylvania. Gilbert’s son Joseph Cope continued his father’s work, augmenting the Cope family’s genealogy and those of other prominent families. Awbury Arboretum Association Cope family collection, 1791-2011 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Henry Cope purchased 40 acres of land in East Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1852 where he built a home for his growing family. Over the next 70 years, his descendants build 24 houses representing a variety of architectural styles. A portion of this land, now known as the Awbury Arboretum, was left to the City Parks Association in 1916 to protect it from development. The Awbury Arboretum Association Cope family collection, 1791-2011, encompasses several small collections donated by various descendants of the Cope family. It includes correspondence, deeds, financial records, journals, and photographs.

Reinhardt, Hawley and Hewes family papers, 1762-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Reinhardt, Hawley, Hewes and Meredith families are tied together through marriage and their Quaker faith across multiple generations. William Dell Reinhardt, a University of Pennsylvania graduate and doctor, married Rebecca Hawley, a teacher. They had six children: Jesse Hawley Reinhardt, Mary Bailey Reinhardt, Esther Meredith Reinhardt, Lydia Ludwig Reinhardt, Elizabeth Christina Reinhardt, and David Jones Reinhardt. David Jones Reinhardt married Anna Margaret Hewes in 1896. These individuals created the bulk of the material contained within this collection. William Hunt letterbook, 1748-1772 (inclusive)

Abstract:: William Hunt's included correspondence is largely personal, though there are a few letters addressed to his Meeting. In addition to correspondence, the volume includes testimonies of Hunt's character and a short account of his travels on religious visits and his last illness and death. According to a note in the cover of the letterbook, it is believed the letters were copied by William Hunt's sister.

Rebecca Jones letterbook, 1797-1805 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The commonplace book of Rebecca Jones includes extracts from H.F.'s manuscript, Samuel Fothergill's remarks upon Cornelius Cayley's application to Friends of Leed's Meeting, the manuscript found among the papers of Thomas Wilson, a sermon preached by Luke Cock at York, the Vision of William Bayley, and the Quaker testimonies of Samuel Fothergill and Rachel Wilson. The volume also includes copied letters to Friends of the Women's Meeting in Dublin, and a letter to Catherine Payton.
