Joseph Conrad collection, 1898-1943 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), a novelist and short story writer, was born Jozef Konrad Teodor Korzeniowski in Berdichev, Ukraine, and became a British citizen in 1886. Best known for his short story "Heart of Darkness" (1902), Conrad also wrote a number of novels on his travels. The collection includes letters from Conrad and third party letters, as well as three corrected typescript drafts.

"On Reading Shakespeare", 1932 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Logan Pearsall Smith's "On Reading Shakespeare,' originally published in 1933, explores Shakespeare's writing, particularly his characterization and command of language. The manuscript is handwritten and includes various edits and annotations made by Smith. Also included are the notes on the manuscript from Scribners (where the manuscript was purchased by Christopher Morley), and a letter by Morley written at the time of his donation of the manuscript in 1952.

Jay A. Gertzman collection on Samuel Roth, 1926-2014 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Jay A. Gertzman, professor emeritus of English at Mansfield University, is the author of four books: Fantasy, Fashion, and Affection: Illustrated and Decorated Editions of Robert Herrick's Poetry, Bookleggers and Smuthounds: The Trade in Erotica, 1920-1940; Samuel Roth, Infamous Modernist; and A Descriptive Bibliography of Lady Chatterley's Lover: With Essays Toward a Publishing History of the Novel. This collection focuses on Gertzman's research on Samuel Roth (1893-1974), writer, publisher, and entrepreneur, who is best known for publishing unauthorized excerpts of James Joyce's Ulysses in the United States, and for being the plaintiff in a landmark case before the United States Supreme Court that redefined what constitutes obscene material unprotected by the First Amendment. James M. Gibson research collection on Horace Howard Furness, 1882-1992 (inclusive) 1975-1985 (bulk)

Abstract:: This collection contains research materials collected and compiled by James M. Gibson for a biography of Horace Howard Furness, The Philadelphia Shakespeare Story: Horace Howard Furness and the Variorum Shakespeare, published in 1990. The bulk of this collection consists of photocopies of original nineteenth and early twentieth century documents made between roughly 1975 and 1985. This collection gathers hundreds of letters and articles that relate to H. H. Furness, from over fifty libraries and repositories, and illuminates Gibson's research and writing process. Furness (1833-1912) was a leading Shakespeare scholar, and thus some of the material pertains to the study of Elizabethan theater.

James T. Farrell papers, 1916-1983 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Born to a working class family in Chicago, James T. Farrell (1904-1979) rose quickly to be a leading figure for 20th century naturalism in American literature. An exceptionally prolific writer, Farrell published works spanning over five decades; however, his critics expressed that his output led to poor craftsmanship and editorial discretion throughout his later works. In addition to his professional works, Farrell produced a seemingly inexhaustible amount of correspondence, diaries, articles, and musings which covered a wide range of topics from politics to baseball. The currently available portion of this collection consists of over one hundred linear feet of personal and professional correspondence. Having kept many copies of his own drafts and letters as well, the correspondence provides a nearly complete view into Farrell's conversations with publishers, politicians, family, fans and critics. There are American, Belgian, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish publications in the collection. There are a variety of formats represented: landscape comics, periodicals, illustrated serials, two blank journals with illustrated covers, a French children's book, a single piece of sheet music, and two image paste-in collection books.
