Abstract:: Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985) was a Hungarian-born violinist and conductor best known for his association with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Ormandy's characteristic conducting style resulted in the "Philadelphia Sound," which he brought around the world through recordings, international tours, and guest conducting engagements. This collection contains test pressings and private recordings, mostly of Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Abstract:: The Philadelphia Orchestra was founded in 1900, and has developed and maintained its status as a prominent symphonic ensemble throughout its existence. Its history informs and intersects with the broader history of music in the twentieth century, as well as numerous historical movements, events and developments on a regional, national and global scale. The records of The Philadelphia Orchestra Association document its activities from 1900 to 2023 through administrative records, concert programs, photographs, scrapbooks and audio and visual recordings. This collection is not fully processed. While materials listed here have been processed and are available for research, a significant portion of the collection, labeled "unavailable," remains in process and cannot be consulted at this time. As soon as additional portions of the collection are completed they will be made available via additions to this finding aid. The last addition of completed materials occurred on October 26, 2023.

Abstract:: The Eugene Ormandy family home movies are amateur films shot between 1932 and 1947 by conductor Eugene Ormandy on his own hand-held camera and by others when Ormandy appears in the films. The content of the films includes scenes of Ormandy conducting the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. Also included are arrivals and departures at train stations along with musicians from his two resident orchestras. Otherwise, the content of the films is primarily scenes of leisure. The locales include his home in Minneapolis, MN, European cities including London, Vienna, and Stockholm, and several vacations in the Austrian alps, as well as vacations in Florida, Bermuda, and New Hampshire. There are also several scenes aboard passenger ships on his way to or from Europe. Abstract:: Dr. Irving Stein (1906-2000) was an orthopedic surgeon and professor at the University of Pennsylvania, who also served on the board of the Philadelphia Orchestra. This collection documents his relationship with Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985), the conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and his efforts to memorialize Ormandy's accomplishments following his death.

Abstract:: Eugene Ormandy served as the conductor/musical director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra from 1931 to 1936 and the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1937 to 1980.This collection of photographs documents the career and life of Eugene Ormandy from the early 1880s to the early 1990s, with the bulk of the photographs dating from the 1940s to the 1970s. Abstract:: Research files, cassette tapes, and transcripts for Daniel's biography of Leopold Stokowski titled Stokowski: A Counterpoint of View (1982). Includes the author's correspondence, photocopies of Leopold Stokowski's correspondence, programs, reviews, clippings, photographs, and the completed manuscript submitted for publication; plus preservation and service copies of the oral history sound recordings.

Abstract:: Curtis W. Davis (1928-1986) was a television producer who planned to publish a biography of the orchestral conductor Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977). The biography remained unfinished at the time of Davis' death. This collection consists of his research materials, notes, correspondence, and drafts of the planned biography.
