Abstract:: Jeoffry B. Gordon (born 1942) is a retired physician who primarily worked in California. His specialties included family medicine, public health and general preventive medicine, and medical toxicology. This collection documents, to a limited degree, Jeoffry B. Gordon's involvement as a medical activist in the late 1960s and early 1970s, especially in the Student Health Organization (SHO) and the Medical Committee for Human Rights (MCHR). While documentation of Gordon's immediate involvement is limited, the collection provides a glimpse into the world of medical activsm, more broadly, during this time period, through publications, newspaper clippings, journal articles, and newsletters.

Abstract:: Bernard G. Segal graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1931. Segal became the youngest Deputy Attorney General in Pennsylvania's history in 1932, the first Jewish lawyer elected Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 1952, and the first Jewish president of the American Bar Association in 1969. Segal also co-chaired the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and headed the Office of Economic Opportunity's Advisory Committee on Legal Services to the Poor. The Bernard G. Segal papers document all of Segal's activities outside of his work as a lawyer at Schnader, Harrison, Segal, and Lewis. This includes correspondence, reports, and minutes from his professional associations, governmental appointments, and his civic work.

Abstract:: The Congress of Racial Equality was organized circa 1942 by an interracial group of University of Chicago students and theological seminary students, together with members of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (U.S.). The purpose of the organization was to eliminate all racial segregation and discrimination by means of interracial, direct nonviolent action. By 1966, CORE's official policy shifted to Black power and Black separatism while rejecting the former principles of non-violence. This small collection of records reflects the work done in CORE by George Houser.

Abstract:: The records of the Medical Committee for Human Rights (MCHR) include minutes and other administrative records; correspondence and other papers of members; financial records; records of field work and other programs; subsidiary groups; events; publications; and publicity. Arising in conjunction with the civil rights movement, the MCHR was an organization of doctors, nurses, and other health workers dedicated to advancing health among minority groups and equality in the health industry. Working in both southern and northern states, the MCHR also fought for national health insurance, the rights of prisoners, and the end of the Vietnam War.

Abstract:: Sheldon Hackney (1933-2013) was a historian of the American south, an academic administrator, and the chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities during the Clinton administration. This collection consists of a very small number of papers created by Sheldon Hackney and includes research notes and audio recordings relating to his research on African American history, the Civil Rights Movement and folk life and folk song.
