Abstract:: Elizabeth Biddle Yarnall and her husband, D. Robert Yarnall, were Quakers, active in the American Friends Service Committee relief efforts. They worked with the Quaker center in Vienna, Austria, during the summer of 1938 to help in the emigration of German and Austrian Jews. The collection contains correspondence concerning their work with refugees and letters from refugees asking for assistance, especially the musician and composers Karl Weigl and his wife, Vally, who emigrated in October 1938. Also several essays by Elizabeth Yarnall on her Vienna experience and letters from Dorothy Canfield Fisher in her efforts to create an American children's relief organization for German children. The material conveys the difficulties in Jewish emigration in the years just preceding the Second World War.

Abstract:: The Swarthmore Refugee Resource House, Swarthmore, Pa., was founded in 1979 by members of Swarthmore Monthly Meeting as a place of temporary assistance and shelter for legal refugees in gaining independence by providing them with shelter, counseling and tutoring in English. The Swarthmore Refugee House was incorporated in 1988 as a non-profit corporation. However, the House was laid down in 1994 when Swarthmore College reclaimed its building and the Board was unable to find either sufficient funding or a new space in which to continue to function.

Abstract:: The Workroom, a project of the 15th Street and 20th Street New York Monthly Meetings, was established in 1940 by the Joint Peace and Service Committee of the New York Monthly Meetings. The sewing room produced garments for needy children during World War II. This collection contains one photo album, two packets of snapshots, and one folder of sixteen loose photographs. The photo album documents the Workroom activities as well as international photos of recipients of garments, with descriptions. The collection dates fromare 1940 to 1976.

Abstract:: The Central America Working Group of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting began in 1985 under the name "Sanctuary Working Group." In 1986, the group was given over twenty one thousand dollars with which to send volunteers to the American southwestern border to aid refugees. In 1989, the name of the group was changed to the Central America Working Group, and its three main areas of activism became lobbying, education, and refugee assistance. The most recent minute of the group in this collection is dated November 1992, but the final listing of the group in the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting directory occurs in 1995/1996.
