Joseph Hoag Family Papers, 1813-1864 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Joseph Hoag (1762-1846) was a New York and Vermont Quaker minister who regarded himself as a traditional Friend, opposing both Elias Hicks and Joseph Gurney. He is best known for his "Vision" of 1803 which predicted an American Civil War, and his Journal, the publication of which in 1860 precipitated a schism at Scipio Monthly Meeting into Otisite and Kingite groups. His wife, Huldah Hoag (1762-1850), was also a Quaker minister, as were many of his ten children. The collection contains the manuscript of Joseph Hoag's Journal, as well as some family correspondence and related papers. Of particular importance are the manuscript journal transcribed by Hoag's granddaughter, Narcissa Battery Coffin, under his direction and correspondence from Huldah Hoag, Joseph Hoag, and Lindley Murray Hoag.

Abstract:

Friends World College was conceived as an accredited, co-educational, degree-granting liberal arts college combining a residence program with the opportunity for foreign travel and study. Planned as a "college without walls," it was sponsored by the New York Yearly Meeting and opened in September 1965. The College flourished in the 1960s counterculture environment, but ran into financial difficulties in the 1970s. While much of its support came from Quakers, in 1975 it became officially non-sectarian. It was merged into Long Island University in 1991. The collection contains the records of Friends World College, 1958-1992, compiled for New York Yearly Meeting by George Nicklin; correspondence and legal papers concerning the transfer and sale of assets and the resulting lawsuits; topical files of George Nicklin; and his records on Pax Amicus, the group which opposed the merger and loss of College assets. Halliday Jackson Manuscripts, 1755-1833 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Halliday Jackson (1771-1835) was a Quaker minister from New Garden and Darby, Pa.. From 1798 to 1800 he joined the Quaker mission to the Seneca Indians organized by the Indian Committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Shortly after his return from the mission to the Seneca, Halliday Jackson married Jane Hough and moved to Darby, Pa. Following Jane's death in 1830, Halliday Jackson remarried in 1833 to Ann P. Paschall (1792-1874), also a Quaker minister. These records contain documents relating to the work of Halliday Jackson (1771-1835), Pennsylvania Quaker minister to the Seneca Nation. Includes correspondence, journals, copy work in prose and poetry, a history of the Separation of 1828, papers on Native American affairs. One journal concerns a visit to the Quakers in Ohio in 1816. Ruth P. Ringenbach Collected Friends World College Papers, 1975-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Ruth P. Ringenbach, a member of Westbury Monthly Meeting, was a member of the Friends World College Association and served on the New York Yearly Meeting Liaison Committee. She was treasurer of the Association from 1978-1985. Friends World College became independent of New York Yearly Meeting in 1975, but members of the Association who were also members of New York Yearly Meeting served as a liaison between Friends World College and New York Yearly Meeting, keeping the Yearly Meeting informed about the state of the College and its Quaker character. The collection contains Ruth Ringenbach's files on Friends World College and Friends World College Association.

Thomas Willis writings relating to the Separation and Quaker testimonies, 1807-1848 (inclusive)

Abstract:

These writings, apparently a draft in answer to Evan Lewis's defense of Hicks, elucidate Willis's beliefs and his account of the Separation, including his being part of the committee that presented the complaint against Hicks which culminated in the disownment of Hicks in 1829 by the Orthodox faction. Willis defends the importance of the Bible, the divinity of Jesus, and the authority of the Church. Includes a draft of a letter to Josiah Forster (1848) in which Willis refers to the Wilburite Separation in New England Yearly Meeting and to a proposal presented at Philadelphia Yearly Meeting to hold a meeting of representatives from all American yearly meetings and also a draft of a letter of advice (1807) written by Thomas Willis to an unnamed young woman in his role as Elder.

Abstract:

The collections contains a draft or copy of a letter dated 6 mo. 1846 from Nicholas Hallock to Elizabeth Paxson which explains his religious beliefs; an 1848 letter from Henry Titus and others, Jerusalem, Long Island, NY, expressing their thanks for Hallock's religious visit; a copy of a letter dated 1835 from George Hull to Hallock, dispirited by the divisions among Friends; a record of the births of the family of Edward Hallock, younger brother of Nicholas; and a copy of the minute adopted by the New York Yearly Meeting in which Marlborough Monthly Meeting was laid down. Also typed transcripts of these documents, typed extracts from an 1884 manuscript by Nathaniel Hallock, and biographical information supplied by the donor.

Planned as a "college without walls," it was sponsored by the New York Yearly Meeting and opened in September 1965. It was merged into Long Island University in 1991. The collection contains Mary-Cushing Niles's files pertaining to all aspects of Friends World College. Mary-Cushing Niles (1900-1993), a management expert and member of Stony Run Monthly Meeting, married Henry Edward Niles in 1923.

Samuel Wetherill Correspondence, 1780-1816 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Samuel Wetherill (1736-1816), a Philadelphia manufacturer of cloth, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, was a birthright Quaker born in Burlington, N.J. During the Revolutionary War, he actively supported the military effort and was disowned from Philadelphia Monthly Meeting in 1779. In 1781, he, along with other disowned Quakers, founded an independent Quaker meeting, called the Society of Free Quakers. This collection contains correspondence primarily from another group of disowned Quakers from Sandwich Monthly Meeting in Massachusetts. This New England group was centered on Timothy Davis (1730-1798), a respected Friend and minister, who published a pamphlet in 1776 concerning the payment of taxes to the new government. He was disowned in 1778. The collection includes business and personal letters as well as those which deal directly with the cause of the Free Quakers. Abstract:

Contains transcriptions of John Mott's letters to family and friends and journals, probably compiled to circulate in manuscript form. Also some original letters from John Mott to his family. Mott wrote extensively on his religious views, particularly on Quaker testimony and the issues of the Hicksite separation, as well as the conflicts within Genesee Yearly Meeting which led to the separation of Congregational (Progressive) Friends. Of special interest is a draft of responses to queries dated 1851 which refers to a discipline recently adopted by Friends.
