Abstract:
The Henry Howard Houston Estate Papers document the creation and development of a large real estate investment in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties. The collection also provides extension information on land ownership in this area from the late eighteenth to mid nineteenth century through the original deeds, which form the title papers series of the collection.

Josiah Harmar Penniman was the fourteenth Provost of the University of Pennsylvania. This collection consists of two parts, the professional and personal papers of Josiah H. Penniman and papers of his family, mainly, his father James Lanman Penniman, his mother Maria Davis Hosmer, and his brother James Hosmer Penniman.

Abstract:
John W. Townsend graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an A.B. in 1875, and went on to a career as an industry executive and capitalist as well as a local historian. The Townsend Collection contains documents ranging in date from 1726 to 1933. The vast majority of these items belonged to John W. Townsend. These papers trace local and national history through John W. Townsend's personal, family and business interests.

The compiled indices that comprise this collection were created by the Office of the Recorder and the Office of Alumni Records. The collection documents on index cards the service provided by individuals as officers and teachers at the University of Pennsylvania from 1749 to 1942, as military personnel to the United States military during the wars of the first half twentieth century, as contributors to the larger world of learning.

From the creation of the Board of Trustees in 1749, there has always been a person who was responsible for the task of maintaining the minutes, coordinating meetings, and preparing and, beginning in 1828, signing diplomas. The records of the Office of the Secretary reflect the many duties and responsibilities of the Secretary as both an officer of the Board of Trustees and as well as an official in the University administration.
