Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Annual Sessions, 1662-2022 (inclusive)

Abstract:: A general meeting for Friends in the Delaware Valley area was first convened at Burlington in 1681. The first general meeting held in Philadelphia was in 1683, and in 1685, it was agreed that the meetings in New Jersey and Pennsylvania should be combined into one yearly meeting with alternate sessions at Philadelphia and at Burlington. The great Separation among Philadelphia Friends into Orthodox and Hicksite branches occurred at the Yearly Meeting of 1827. Through the course of the early 20th century, the PYMs began to draw back together until 1955 when organic union was formally approved, and a reunited PYM, the present organization, was created. Records of the annual sessions of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting include minutes and other records such as epistles sent and recieved which pertain to those annual sessions. Also included are the records of those committees charged with the preparations for the annual sessions.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Education Committees (1833-1974), 1833-1976 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Committee on Education of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends acts primarily as an advisory and consultative body. It has various funds at its disposal for use in assisting Friends schools and individual Quakers in the Yearly Meeting. An Education Committee was first appointed by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1833 to survey the state of education within its limits. Hicksites and Orthodox Friends subsequently named a sucession of subroups on education and libraries until the 1870's when both branches formed more permanent committees. In 1950, the Hicksites joined with the Orthodox to merge their respective groups into a Joint Committee on Education, before the actual reunification of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1955. The records of the committees include minutes, Executive Committee minutes, and Extension Committee minutes. Also includes records of the Mary Jeanes Loan Committee and the Anne P. Townsend Fund.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Prison Service Committee (1958-1976), 1958-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Philadelphia Yearly Meeting's Prison Service Committee of Southern New Jersey was organized in the mid 1960s. It focused its activities on the reform of female and juvenile justice. Members of the Committee developed a successful Friendly Visitors Program, staffed by volunteers, and a volunteer Probation Counselor Program. The Committee was also involved in lobbying efforts, maintained a speakers' bureau, and published a newsletter, "No Bars Hold." Records include minutes of the Prison Service Committee of Southern New Jersey and its predecessor, Prison Service Committee, staff records, reports, financial and personnel records, and publications/projects files.
