Wilmer J. and Mildred Binns Young Papers, 1909-2014 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Wilmer J. Young (1887-1983), a Quaker teacher and peace activist born in Iowa, was involved in post World War I reconstruction in France and Poland. He married Mildred Binns in 1922, and together they worked with AFSC work camps and cooperative farms until he began to teach at Pendle Hill in 1955. The collection contains primarily journals and correspondence from his time in France.

Swarthmore Village Business and Professional Association Records, 1983-1994 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Records of the Swarthmore Village Business and Professional Association, a group organized to encourage a healthy business district. The Association sponsored a sidewalk sale, Christmas Carol sing, and other activities in an effort to promote the local businesses. It dissolved in January 1994 due to lack of participation of its membership.

Abstract:: This collection contains the records of the Woman's Club of Swarthore, founded in 1898. The Club offered women of the community a means of support and education, a place to meet and find common interests and nurtured the founding of a number of community organizations. Also included is the photocopy of a sketch of the Hockessin Schoolhouse from 1840.

New York Yearly Meeting collection on conscientious objection, 1914-1970 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains papers concerning conscientious objection collected by New York Yearly Meeting. Folder 1 contains a small amount of correspondence regarding COs in 1914 from Ulysses DeRosa, a member of New York Yearly Meeting (Orthodox); folders 2 and 3 contain largely correspondence, 1939-1946, concerning work with COs by the subcommittee on Conscientious Objectors of the New York Yearly Meeting Committee on Peace and Social Order, Joint Work-Camp Committee, and the Metropolitan Board for Conscientious Objectors which centralized the work of advising; folder 4 contains letters, 1939-1940, from Quakers affirming their membership in the Society of Friends and their belief in the peace testimony; folder 5 contains material concerning registration and draft issues, 1948-1970.
