Abstract:: This collection consists of miscellaneous cased photographs - primarily daguerreotypes and ambrotypes, with some other formats - collected at various times from various sources by the Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. Many were acquired as parts of manuscript collections of family papers.

Robbins Family Papers, 1849-1934 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This small collection concerning the Robbins family, Quakers who owned the historic Seven Stars Tavern property in Salem County, New Jersey, was compiled by John H. Bourne. The Robbins family purchased the tavern about 1805, and the property remained in the family until it was purchased by John H. Bourne in 1927. The Robbins family belonged to Pilesgrove Monthly Meeting (Hicksite), which in 1928 became Woodstown Monthly Meeting. John Bourne also was a member of Woodstown Monthly Meeting. The collection contains some genealogical information on the Robbins family and correspondence and articles concerning the Seven Stars property, as well as poetry, prose, and a diary (1875) of Annie Lawrie Robbins (1828-1916), the unmarried Robbins daughter who kept house in the Seven Stars homestead, and other family material. In addition to the history of the property, the collection, particularly the diary, offers insight into the life of rural South Jersey Quakers in the late nineteenth century.

Benjamin F. Whitson Family Papers, 1835-1957 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Benjamin F. Whitson (1867-1957) of Moylan, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, was a Quaker businessman. Whitson was active in Quaker affairs such as Friends World Conference in 1937 and the Fellowship of Reconciliation, and in Quaker concerns such as peace, temperance, and education. He was the son of Thomas H. and Phebe (Cooper) Whitson, and his family and extended family has deep Quaker associations. Both Benjamin Whitson and his father, were recognized as Quaker ministers and made visits to Ohio Yearly Meeting (Conservative). Benjamin Whitson lived in California from 1905-1907 and was active in Pasadena Meeting of Friends. In later life, he collected letters and genealogical information on the many Quaker branches of his family. Abstract:: These papers include the journal of Edith Bushong from 1856 to 1858, detailing the life of the wife of a 19th century Quaker farmer. The papers also include essays and a copy book of Abraham Rakestraw, recording his editorial letters to newspapers under various pseudonyms.

Fussell-Lewis Family Papers, 1836-1938-bulk 1836-1866 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection includes the papers and correspondence of the Fussell and Lewis famlies. The latter relate primarily family and local news. Of particular interest are several letters by Graceanna Lewis denouncing slavery, an account of the response in New York Yearly Meeting to the disownment of Isaac T. Hopper, and correspondence relating an encounter with the Seneca Indians. Other letters include those written to Mariann Lewis by friends from Kimberton Boarding School, some of which relate to the antislavery movement, and letters from Linnaeus Fussell to his family.

Fair Hill Boarding School records, 1815-1869 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection includes manuscripts relating to the establishment of Fair Hill Boarding School by the Baltimore Yearly Meeting. Included are documents concerning the purchase of land, distribution of the Fair Hill Fund, and lists of rules for Westtown and Nine Partners Boarding Schools. These materials reflect Quaker views of education and their objectives in the establishment of Quaker schools. Especially interesting is a letter from Ann King relating the efforts of Nine Partners School to maintain Quaker values. Other correspondents include John Ellicott, William Morsell, Caleb Bentley, and Whitson Canby.

Abstract:: This collection includes letters and legal documents of the Gest family over several generations. The collection also includes genealogical information on the Gests, their ancestors the Dickinsons, and their descendants, the Pownalls. Notable among the correspondence is a letter from Philadelphia Western District Women's Meeting to Deborah West, Jr., reprimanding her for disunity, presumably with the Hicksites. Also included are wills of Joseph and Deborah Gest, and letters from John B. Gest and Elizabeth Pownall.

Moore-Haines family papers, 1812-1886 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection is composed of papers and correspondence of several generations of the Moore and Haines family. Included is genealogical data, correspondence between Lindley Moore and Abigail Mott Moore at Nine Partners and Abby's mother Ann Mott, recounting details of the Hicksote controversy, and letters written by Abby Moore to her daughter Mary H. Moore at Westtown School. An account of the life and death of Mary H. Moore is also included, as well as a letter from Lindley Moore to Elba Monthly Meeting, New York, attesting to the importance of silent worship and requesting permission to hold weekly meetings in a private home. Also included are letters between Emmor and Ann Mott Haines, from his father Reuben, and to other members of his family. Letters addressed to Alfred and Emily (Potter) Haines from members of their family describe London Yearly Meeting and impressions of English Friends. Another letter is written on a daily program from Friends Academy, dated 1863.
