Abstract:: Contains papers relating to the Emlen family, residents of Middletown and West Chester, Pennsylvania. Chiefly correspondence (1817-1849) of Sarah Foulke Farquhar Emlen (1787-1849), Quaker minister, relating to her travels to visit Friends' meetings in England, Ireland, New England, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia. Also correspondence of Quaker ministers 1740-1790, copybooks, and memorabilia. Includes material relating to Westtown School, a Quaker boarding school in Chester County, Pa., where both Emlens taught; the Hicksite-Orthodox separation; slavery, the free produce movement and other Quaker concersn. Correspondents include Moses Brown, John Churchman, Samuel Emlen (ca. 1765-1837), Josiah Forster, Samuel Fothergill, Isaac Hadwen, Thomas Kite, Thomas Shillitoe, Esther Tuke, Joseph Whitall, and John Wilbur.

Heacock Family Papers, 1773-1928 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Heacocks were a Quaker family of Bucks and Montgomery Counties, Pennsylvania. The collection includes correspondence, diary, and letter book (1871-1872), of Joseph Heacock (1846-1918), farmer, of Wyncote, Pa., including material relating to his work on a farm in Albion, N.Y., and in iron works in Pittsburgh, Pa., to earn money to pay debts; account book (1836-1877) of his father, Joseph Heacock (1800-1883); papers relating to the teaching activity of his wife, Elizabeth Walker Heacock, and unmarried sisters, Eliza, Annie, Jane, and Martha Heacock, in various Philadelphia area Quaker schools; biographical and genealogical data on the Hallowell, Heacock, Longstreth, and Penrose families; and minute book (1857-1891) of Richland Turnpike or Plank Road Company.

Collins Family Papers, 1797-1937 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Collins family was a Quaker family of New England and New York City. Abel Collins (1770-1834) was a birthright Quaker and a minister recorded by Hopkinton Monthly Meeting. He married Mary A. Wilbur (d. 1858) of Hopkinton in 1790, and they had eight children. One of their sons, Abel Francis Collins, was clerk of South Kingston Monthly Meeting. He had three sons who attended Friends Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island, and continued their studies at Brown University. The collection contains extensive family correspondence (1812-1903) which covers a variety of topics, including schools and education, Quaker concerns, topical events of the day, and family life; journals of Francis W. Collins, including descriptions of his student days at Friends Boarding School in Providence; family business and financial papers; miscellaneous papers, photographs, and genealogical material on the Collins and Burdick families.

Stabler Family Papers, 1835-1955(bulk) (inclusive)

Abstract:: Contains the papers of the Stabler family of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Greenwich, Ct., and their collateral lines. The collection spans six generations of a Quaker family and includes diaries, daybooks, albums, pictures, and voluminous correspondence concerned primarily with family issues. Louisa Merritt Field (1826-1914) married Edward Hartshorne Stabler (1813-1877) in 1859. He was the son of Edward Stabler (1769-1831), an Alexandria, Virginia, druggist, by his second wife, Mary Hartshorne. They had three children: Mary Cope (1862-69), Edward Lincoln Stabler (1865-1959) who married Elizabeth Tubby, and Louise M. Stabler (1868-1954) who married George Howard Parker. Louisa M. Field was the daughter of Richard Field and Deborah Merritt Field of New York Monthly Meeting. Her father built the house on Willow Street, Brooklyn, in 1838, and the house remained in the family until 1922 when Edward H. and Louisa Stabler's son, Edward L. Samuel Wetherill Correspondence, 1780-1816 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Samuel Wetherill (1736-1816), a Philadelphia manufacturer of cloth, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, was a birthright Quaker born in Burlington, N.J. During the Revolutionary War, he actively supported the military effort and was disowned from Philadelphia Monthly Meeting in 1779. In 1781, he, along with other disowned Quakers, founded an independent Quaker meeting, called the Society of Free Quakers. This collection contains correspondence primarily from another group of disowned Quakers from Sandwich Monthly Meeting in Massachusetts. This New England group was centered on Timothy Davis (1730-1798), a respected Friend and minister, who published a pamphlet in 1776 concerning the payment of taxes to the new government. He was disowned in 1778. The collection includes business and personal letters as well as those which deal directly with the cause of the Free Quakers. Moore-Haines family papers, 1812-1886 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection is composed of papers and correspondence of several generations of the Moore and Haines family. Included is genealogical data, correspondence between Lindley Moore and Abigail Mott Moore at Nine Partners and Abby's mother Ann Mott, recounting details of the Hicksote controversy, and letters written by Abby Moore to her daughter Mary H. Moore at Westtown School. An account of the life and death of Mary H. Moore is also included, as well as a letter from Lindley Moore to Elba Monthly Meeting, New York, attesting to the importance of silent worship and requesting permission to hold weekly meetings in a private home. Also included are letters between Emmor and Ann Mott Haines, from his father Reuben, and to other members of his family. Letters addressed to Alfred and Emily (Potter) Haines from members of their family describe London Yearly Meeting and impressions of English Friends. Another letter is written on a daily program from Friends Academy, dated 1863.

John Mott papers, 1822-1851 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Contains transcriptions of John Mott's letters to family and friends and journals, probably compiled to circulate in manuscript form. Also some original letters from John Mott to his family. Mott wrote extensively on his religious views, particularly on Quaker testimony and the issues of the Hicksite separation, as well as the conflicts within Genesee Yearly Meeting which led to the separation of Congregational (Progressive) Friends. Of special interest is a draft of responses to queries dated 1851 which refers to a discipline recently adopted by Friends.
