Abstract:
Born on September 14, 1742 in Carskerdo, Fife, Scotland. Although James Wilson attended numerous universities while living Scotland, he never attained a degree. It was Wilson's pursuit of studying law that helped pave become a significant figure in American history. Wilson began studying law at the law office of John Dickinson. By 1766, Wilson attained the bar in Philadelphia and soon after opened his own practice in Reading. Wilson was fairly successful as a lawyer and he managed to amass a small fortune during this time. Wilson's greatest achievement in public life was his part in the establishment of the United States Constitution. He regularly advocated the idea that sovereignty resided in the people, that the President and members of both houses of Congress should be popularly elected. Newton, Gordon, Johnston, Murdoch, and Scott of Madeira, Portugal letters, 1790-1835 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection comprises thirty-nine letters from American businessmen to the Madeira, Portugal-based wine merchants Francis Newton, Alexander Johnston, Thomas Gordon, and their partners, spanning the period from 1790 to 1835. Most of these letters discuss trade relations, the terms of specific deals, and the fluctuations of the market. The most common item of discussion is the exchange of flour or, to a lesser extent, corn and other grains for Madeira wine. Most of the letters (twenty-four) are sent from Philadelphia, while merchants from Boston, Charleston, New York, Norfolk, and Petersburgh also appear in the correspondence.

Florentine documents and correspondence collection, 1437-1804 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Collection concerning Florentine families, organizations, trades, and industries covering the years 1437-1804. The documents that compose the collection are divided into two broad sections, one dedicated to families and organizations, and the other to subjects. The former, arranged alphabetically by name, then chronologically for each family or organization, features documents pertaining to about 130 among the most important Florentine families, as well as institutions such as the Monte di pietà and the hospital of Santa Maria Novella (referred to as Spedale). The families that are best-known in the collection include the Acciaiuoli, Altoviti, Antinori, Corsi, Corsini, Guadagni, Rucellai, Salviati, and Strozzi; the best-represented families in the collection are the Amadori, Capponi, Cassi, Lapini, and Ricciardi. Samuel D. Ingham correspondence, 1734-1910 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Samuel D. Ingham correspondence comprises letters predominantly as well as other papers relating to Ingham and his life. The majority of the collection is correspondence either written by Ingham, to him, or to and from other political figures. Important subsets of the correspondence addressed to Ingham include letters regarding the Peggy Eaton Affair, a 1831 scandal that led to the resignation of President Jackson's entire cabinent (including then Secretary of the Treasury Ingham), as well as a series of letters from President Jackson to his Secretary of the Treasury. There are two letterbooks containing copies of letters from Ingham to others, particularly centered on but not limited to his time as Secretary of the Treasury. Other materials include postcards of Ingham's home and grave, published speeches by Ingham, a biography written by his son William Armstrong Ingham, and newspapers with articles regarding him.

English legal documents collection, 1592-1810 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection contains 52 assorted English legal documents. Most are brief transactional records attesting to land sales, contracts, or estate settlements. Though mostly unrelated, there are a few small groups of connected documents, such as the five certificates of payment by Captain Roger Martin to various parties executed during December 1685. Beyond these transactional documents are a 1679 record of arguments before the Privy Council as well as a 1770 warrant for the arrest of Nicholas Gwyn, an Ipswich medical doctor.

Gordon Block collection of Lincolniana, 1760-1963 (inclusive) 1840-1950 (bulk)

Abstract:
Gordon Alexander Block (1885-1964) was a Philadelphia lawyer and collector of Lincoln documents and memorabilia. The collection includes twenty-three documents either signed by Lincoln or in his hand including a number of pleadings and court documents from his years as a lawyer in Illinois. The collection also contains a variety of ephemera from the Civil War era, including campaign ribbons and songbooks from 1860 and 1864 as well as broadsides, ribbons, and mourning cards issued after Lincoln's assassination. In addition, researchers will find a rich selection of visual representations of Lincoln in the collection, including lithographs, prints, photographs, and engravings of the sixteenth president.

Daniel Garrison Brinton (1837-1899) was a Philadelphia surgeon and anthropologist who created, collected, and donated collections of books and manuscripts related to anthropology, colonization of the Americas, and native American linguistics. This collection on Spain and New Spain documents, to a limited degree, Spain's relationships with its colonies and other European powers while struggling to maintain its empire.
