Federal Income Tax Project records, 1974-1999 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In 1974, the American Law Institute began a new series of studies of federal income tax problems. The Federal Income Tax Project comprised a number of studies, including those of Subchapter C, Subchapter K, and Subchapter J of the Internal Revenue Code; a study of international taxation; and a study of generation-skipping transfers. The collection, 1974-1999, includes correspondence, meeting minutes, drafts, memoranda, commentary, and related materials concerning various tax-related projects conducted by the ALI from 1974 to present.

American Law Institute Annual Meeting records, 1923-2005 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The American Law Institute (ALI) was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American law. Former Penn Law Dean William Draper Lewis was the Institute's first director, running the organization's operations out of his campus office. The ALI was conceived as a representative gathering of the American Bar (including Judges, Lawyers, and Law Professors) for the stated mission "to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaptation to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work." To that end, the ALI has held annual meetings since its inception to adopt its restatements and other codification projects, discuss drafts, analyze pending legislation and aspects of the law, set policy, and initialize new projects. Bernard G. Segal papers, 1910-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Bernard G. Segal graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1931. Segal became the youngest Deputy Attorney General in Pennsylvania's history in 1932, the first Jewish lawyer elected Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 1952, and the first Jewish president of the American Bar Association in 1969. Segal also co-chaired the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and headed the Office of Economic Opportunity's Advisory Committee on Legal Services to the Poor. The Bernard G. Segal papers document all of Segal's activities outside of his work as a lawyer at Schnader, Harrison, Segal, and Lewis. This includes correspondence, reports, and minutes from his professional associations, governmental appointments, and his civic work.

Abstract:: Mabel Morris was a public health nurse. After graduating from Mercy Hospital Columbia University Teachers College, she was employed by the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, Temple University, and the Visiting Nurse Society of Philadelphia. This collection contains correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, and alumni memorabilia, articles, teaching aides, and a small selection of photographs.

Edna LaPorte Strumpf papers, 1933-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Edna LaPorte Strumpf was an Army nurse during World War II, as well as a longtime nurse in Veterans Hospitals and a Red Cross volunteer. This collection consists predominantly of lecture notes and exams from the period of Edna Strumpf's attendance at Mt. Sinai Hospital Training School for Nurses in Philadelphia, from 1934-1937.

Dorothy A. Mereness papers, 1910-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Dorothy Ann Mereness, R.N., Ed.D., F.A.A.N., was Dean of the School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania from 1965 to 1977 and a pioneer in the development of psychiatric nursing. This collection consists of personal papers and institutional files. The personal papers document Mereness's professional development. Although largely incomplete, the organizational files show the extent of Mereness's involvement in the development of nursing at both regional and national levels.

Presbyterian School of Nursing records, 1871-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection documents the founding, flourishing and eventual closing of the Presbyterian School of Nursing, a hospital-based nursing school in Philadelphia. The hospital itself was founded in 1871 under the sponsorship of the Presbyterian Church. Its nurse training program was begun in 1889. The collection's strength is the relative completeness of student records, good documentation of the school's curricula and teaching materials. The supportive role both the Ladies Aid Society and the Alumni Association played in the growth of the School are evident in these records.

Abstract:: The Chestnut Hill Hospital School of Nursing Records consist of 20.45 linear feet of hospital records, school administration records, faculty and student files, yearbooks, photographs, and some artifacts. The records extend from the school's creation in 1908 until its closing in 1987. The collection comprehensively documents the growth of a suburban community hospital nurse training program.

Brandywine Home Health Agency records, 1917-1990 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection documents the Brandywine Home Health Agency, Inc. from its inception through its subsequent growth during social, environmental, and legislative changes. As a non-profit volunteer agency, BHHA was conscious of its responsibility to foster innovative and relevant programs. Thus as health needs and technology evolved, it progressed accordingly. Over time, it became a multi-service agency delivering three categories of service: therapeutic, supportive, and preventative. The material in this collection covers all facets of these services and includes records of administration, financial, program services, and public relations.
