Amersham Soup Society records, 1795-1801 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Amersham Soup Society was established in 1798 in England to run a soup kitchen for Amersham's poor. This collection consists of correspondence, accounts, rules, printed matter, subscriber lists and kitchen plans as well as "Count Rumford's Experimental Essays" and memoranda and plans for the relief of the poor.

Robert H. Gere papers, 1752-1883 (inclusive) 1856-1883 (bulk)

Abstract:
Robert H. Gere (1859-1928) was a senior partner at Gere & Church law firm and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Syracuse, NY. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1883 with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and from Syracuse University Law School in 1898. Before beginning his law career, Gere spent thirteen years working as a news reporter. He married Harriet Sexsmith Gere in 1893 and together they had a daughter, Katharine. This collection contains materials dating between 1752 and 1883 and includes two diaries belonging to Robert H. Gere; a book entitled "Genealogy of the Geer Family," in which the lines of George and Thomas Geer are traced from 1621 to 1856; a single leaf from a math copybook that includes a note in pencil dating it to 1752; an oversize copy of The Luzerne Federalist; and the Susquehanna Intelligencer (a local periodical); and an unused travel accounts book.

Florentine documents and correspondence collection, 1437-1804 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Collection concerning Florentine families, organizations, trades, and industries covering the years 1437-1804. The documents that compose the collection are divided into two broad sections, one dedicated to families and organizations, and the other to subjects. The former, arranged alphabetically by name, then chronologically for each family or organization, features documents pertaining to about 130 among the most important Florentine families, as well as institutions such as the Monte di pietà and the hospital of Santa Maria Novella (referred to as Spedale). The families that are best-known in the collection include the Acciaiuoli, Altoviti, Antinori, Corsi, Corsini, Guadagni, Rucellai, Salviati, and Strozzi; the best-represented families in the collection are the Amadori, Capponi, Cassi, Lapini, and Ricciardi. From the creation of the Board of Trustees in 1749, there has always been a person who was responsible for the task of maintaining the minutes, coordinating meetings, and preparing and, beginning in 1828, signing diplomas. The records of the Office of the Secretary reflect the many duties and responsibilities of the Secretary as both an officer of the Board of Trustees and as well as an official in the University administration.

Hare family recipe book, circa 1785-1811 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This volume was written and compiled by John Hare of Canterbury, Kent, England, and gifted to his son, James Hare on 22 March 1785. There is a second hand present, indicating that James Hare continued to contribute recipes to the volume. This volume contains 135 recipes, mostly for medical remedies, attributed both to "J. Hare" and to numerous notable English and European medical figures from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Land and property records for the Philadelphia city block bounded by Walnut and Sansom Streets, and South 6th and 7th Streets., 1794-1908 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection documents the history of land ownership for the block in center city Philadelphia that is currently occupied by the Curtis Building, which is bounded by South 6th and South 7th Streets, and Sansom and Walnut Streets. There are 107 land deeds or indentures, and 23 other records of various sorts that document the sale, purchase, or transfer of property from 1794 to 1908 within this block. The oldest document is an indenture for the entire plot from James Logan, Jr. to John Swanwick, on December 31, 1794. The most recent document is a 1908 survey of the same plot, likely made for the Curtis Publishing Company by the City of Philadelphia. The majority are handwritten on vellum and are largely in good condition. Records are arranged chronologically.

Hall and Hallam family papers, 1785-1818 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection consists of material relating to the Hall and Hallam families in the Leicester area of England, dating from 1785 to 1818. The families appear to have farmed, but they also appear to have been extremely religious, serving as lay preachers and religious leaders for the surrounding communities. The collection contains a recipe book for inks and sealing wax, a commonplace book, a survey for Alton Grange Farm, a diary, and a sermon or speech. While several items are specifically tied to these two families, the other material is assumed to be connected to family members. There is only superficial documentation of any member of the family, but collectively, there is a sense of religious faith crossing generations.

These two volumes contain 357 recipes and were written and compiled by an unknown creator starting in 1799, likely in France. It is unclear when the creator completed these volumes. One volume contains medical remedies and the other contains pantry, culinary, rural economy, and household recipes.
