Abstract:: The Curriculum and Lecture Notes Collection was created by the University Archives in the 1950s to assemble individual manuscripts and small groupings of archival material relating to courses taught at the University of Pennsylvania throughout its entire history. This collection documents the teaching methods used in the various schools of the University of Pennsylvania throughout its history.

Louis Barkhouse Flexner Papers, 1925-1996 (inclusive) 1960-1980 (bulk)

Abstract:: Louis Barkhouse Flexner was a Professor of Anatomy and Chair of the Anatomy Department at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine from 1951 to 1967, a founder of the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Neurological Sciences (now called the Mahoney Institute for Neurosciences), and medical researcher noted for his work pertaining to the biochemistry of memory.The Louis Barkhouse Flexner papers mostly consist of offprints from scholarly journals of articles Flexner authored or co-authored, handwritten drafts of talks Flexner gave, a small collection of photographs, offprints inscribed by his uncles, Abraham and Simon Flexner, and correspondence that is of a mixed professional and personal nature.

Jonathan E. Rhoads Papers, 1934-2002 (bulk) 1802-2002 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Jonathan Rhoads began his long career at the University of Pennsylvania with an internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1932. Upon the completion of the internship, he decided to continue at the University in a residency under I. S. Ravdin, the chief of surgery. He was appointed a full professor of surgery and the J. William White Professor of Surgical Research in 1949. His rise did not stop at the Medical School, but continued into the University proper when he was appointed Provost of the University in 1956, a position he held until 1959. This massive collection documents the life and work of Jonathan Evans Rhoads in multiple dimensions and through all major periods of his long career.

Abstract:: This book of notes was kept by David Greenman during a course of Materia Medica lectures delivered by Dr. Adam Kuhn at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1785. The lecture notes themselves are not limited to Materia Medica in the strictest sense, in that they also include some information about physiology, pathology and therapeutics. The notebook is briefly inscribed by Dr. Edward Cutbush (1772-1843) an officer and surgeon in the United States Navy.

Abstract:: This book of notes on Materia Medica, written in Latin, is neither signed nor dated and contains relatively little contextualizing information. Approximately the first third of the book (through page 80) consists of medical receipts, while the rest of the text contains an alphabetized list of medicinal substances, most of which are plants, though some mineral and animal products are described as well. The term 'Materia Medica' refers to the collected body of knowledge of medicinal substances and their therapeutic applications.

Abstract:: The Dr. Daniel and Eleanor Albert collection of ophthalmology material (1596-2000, undated) presents the historical transformations of eye care and ocular medicine, with a particular emphasis on the field in the nineteenth century. While the majority of materials in this collection relate to ophthalmology, some pertain more broadly to medicine or to American history. In addition to the historical medical documents, this collection includes dozens of pairs of antique spectacles and over one hundred ophthalmoscopes.

Abstract:: Samuel Bellet (1902-1971) was a Philadelphia cardiologist who had an active career as a teacher, researcher, and clinician and was considered a pioneer in the study of arrhythmias. Benjamin Champneys lecture notes, circa 1794-1810 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Benjamin Champneys (1774-1814) was a college and medical student at the University of Pennsylvania (A.B. 1792, M.D. 1805) and, later, a naval surgeon on the frigate Philadelphia. This collection consists of three volumes of notes taken from lectures and reading over an extended period of time and bound together at a later date. The notes focus on the subjects of medicine and chemistry, with additional notes on logic, mathematics, and moral philosophy.
