Abstract:: Nettie Maria Stevens was a research biologist who made important contributions to cytogenetics, embryology and the hypothesis of sex determination by chromosomes. She received her Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr in 1903, and acted as an Associate in Experimental Morphology from 1905-1912. The Nettie Maria Stevens papers contain her personal and professional papers. The collection ranges from 1896-1979 and contains assorted biographical materials, correspondence, obituary notices, articles about Stevens, and other various materials.

Abstract:: Dorothy Wyckoff was an expert in the petrology of metamorphic rocks and a scholar of medieval Latin. Her collection of professional and academic papers spans from circa 1920-1981. Abstract:: Elizabeth Burroughs Kelley attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating magna cum laude in 1926. The collection, which ranges between 1921-1988, also contains a publication and other materials. It evidences the experiences of a young woman attending college during the early 20th century.

Jane Martin Papers, 1931-2009 (inclusive) 1968-2008 (bulk)

Abstract:: This collection contains papers related to Jane Martin's personal, professional, and academic life (c. 1968-2008). Martin held a PhD in African History, and focused most of her life and career around Liberia. Her life as an academic and professional who lived and worked in both Africa and the US often intersected with her personal correspondence and records, and the archive reflects those overlaps. Martin's research into specific tribes, people, and movements in Africa would be useful as primary and secondary records of history on the continent. Her records of syllabi and teaching philosophies chart out American influence on higher education in Liberia and Nigeria where she worked. Documents here also show her work with several institutions where she supported educational programs. Papers, research, and correspondence document her longstanding interest in art and objects in Liberia and her work with the Everhart Museum in Scranton, PA. Melanie Atherton Updegraff Collection, 1910s-1980s (bulk) 1685-2020 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Melanie Atherton Updegraff (1886-1973) was a 1908 graduate of Bryn Mawr who went on to do missionary work for the Presbyterian Mission Board alongside her husband, Reverend David Benjamin Updegraff. The two were primarily stationed in Kolhapur and later Nipani, in West India. The collection includes correspondence between Updegraff and her sisters, children, and sister-in-law, among other family members, photographs of the Atherton and Updegraff families, an autograph collection, and brochures, pamphlets, and official documentation pertaining to Updegraff's missionary work. Updegraff's four sisters and three daughters all went to Bryn Mawr, and we hear about entrance exams, musical productions, and other campus activities in their letters.

Gene-Ann Polk papers and Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society records, 1946 - 2004 (inclusive) 1960 - 1990 (bulk)

Abstract:: Gene-Ann Polk was a physician, hospital administrator, professor of pediatrics at Columbia University, and president of the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society. She was involved with various organizations for Black women physicians in and around New York. The materials in this collection are related to Dr. Polk's education, her private practice, and her years at Harlem Hospital. The collection also includes materials Polk collected related to Black women physicians, and the records of the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society (SSMS).

Hartwig Kuhlenbeck papers, 1911-1984

Extent:: 63.55 linear feet
Abstract:: Born in Germany in 1897, Dr. Hartwig Kuhlenbeck, a neuroanatomist, received his degrees of Ph.D. in Philosophy and of M.D. (summa cum laude) from the University of Jena, Germany. He spent several years lecturing in Japan and at the University of Breslau (Germany) before moving to the United States in 1933. Dr. Kuhlenbeck was appointed to several positions at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, beginning in 1935 as Acting Professor of Anatomy and retiring in 1982 as Emeritus Professor of Anatomy. He spent most of his professional career at Woman’s Medical College, with the exception of a two-year leave of absence from 1944-1946, when he served in the United States Army Medical Corps. Dr. Kuhlenbeck published over 150 works during his career as a world-renowned anatomist. He passed away in 1984.

Hahnemann University photograph collection, circa 1840-2004 (inclusive)

Extent:: 5.4 linear feet (19 boxes of photographs and 3 boxes of negatives)
Abstract:: The Hahnemann University Photograph Collection is an extensive collection that covers the people and buildings of Hahnemann from its beginnings in 1848 as the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania to 2004 as Hahnemann University Hospital. Much of the collection is a photographic record of the buildings that were used and constructed by the organization throughout its history. The photographs consistently span the lifetime of the school and hospital from the mid-1840s to turn of the twenty-first century. Shots include interiors, exteriors, construction sites, and aerial shots of the campus (and city). There are also a few shots of other homeopathic hospitals and schools in the nineteenth century. A significant portion of the collection visually documents the departments and medical instruments/equipment used by those departments.
