Abstract:: The Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles family papers house the correspondence of a Quaker family who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Woodbury, New Jersey; Wilmington, Delaware; and other surrounding areas from approximately 1840 to 1882. A majority of the letters were written to or by Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles; her husband, John Smith Hilles; and other Tatum or Hilles family members. There is a small sampling of assorted family papers, dating from 1825 to 1901. Included, among other items, are school report cards of William Samuel Hilles from Haverford College and an 1834 memoir of Anne Cooper Tatum, Sarah Hilles' mother. In addition, there are deeds to properties owned by the Hilles family in Delaware, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania from 1791 to 1886.

Abstract:: Elizabeth U. Willis's scrapbook includes photos and clippings about her and Sarah F. Underhill, photos of the Underhill family, clippings, illustrations, and portraits of Quakers, meeting houses, and Quaker birthplaces. Quaker autographs and letters are included as well. Letter writers include Samuel Fothergill, Anne Mott, David Sands, William Allinson, William Dillywn, William Rickman, J. Stephenson, George Jones, Lindley Murray, Richard Mott, and John Barrow. Confederate money, fractional currency, colonial money, excerpts of prayers and testimonies, and embroidery and cross stitch samples are also included.

Abstract:: The manuscript entitled, "Sermons by Eli and Sybil Jones," recounts a sermon given by Eli Jones, and a second sermon given by Sybil Jones (beginning on page 22) at Devonshire House, on February 17, 1869. Eli Jones's sermon focuses on 2 Thessalonians 3:1, and Sybil Jones's sermon focuses on Isaiah 21:11.

Abstract:: Contains the collected correspondence of the Bringhurst family, largely compiled by C. Marshall Taylor. It includes correspondence, 1780-1806, of Philadelphia Quaker businessman James Bringhurst and his letters received from John Murray of New York City. Bringhurst corresponded with family and prominent friends including John Dickinson, Job Scott, Nathan Hunt, James Pemberton, Jesse Kersey, Lindley Murray and Moses Brown. Of particular interest are descriptions of life in Philadelphia and the conditions of free blacks, as well as Quaker religious and social concerns and visits from traveling ministers. A second group of letters contains primarily letters from Joseph Bringhurst, the brother of James, to his niece, Elizabeth Foulke while she was traveling in the ministry.

Abstract:: The collection contains papers of Mira Sharpless Townsend, a major Quaker social activist and reformer in Philadelphia. Mira Sharpless Townsend (1798-1859) was born in Philadelphia, attended Friends Select School, and in 1828 married Samuel Townsend (1800-1887). He was a member of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting by whom she had six children, only two surviving to adulthood: Emily Sharpless Townsend who married Powell Stackhouse and Clara Gordon Townsend, married William Penn Troth. During the 1840's, Mira Townsend became an active and vocal social activist who wrote and published a variety of poetry and articles which reflected her strong views regarding women, slavery, temperance and capital punishment. She also was the driving force behind the founding of the Rosine Association.
