Abstract:: Natalie Hinderas (1927-1987), born Natalie Leota Henderson to Abram L. Henderson and Leota Palmer (1904-1997), became a celebrated pianist and music instructor in Philadelphia. She was one of the first African Americans to gain worldwide fame as a classical pianist, and was the first African-American female pianist to be featured by a symphony orchestra. The Natalie Hinderas and Leota Palmer papers, 1904-1993 (bulk 1940-1989), consist mostly of materials relating to Natalie Hinderas, particularly her music career and education, with a significant amount of materials relating to Natalie's mother, Leota Palmer. There are also some personal papers. Materials include: correspondence, programs, scrapbooks, family photograph albums, newspaper clippings, and family property records/deeds from Ohio.

Abstract:: Walter Scott Sample, Jr. was a well-known band director in Phoenixville (Chester County, Pennsylvania), known as "the John Philip Sousa of the area." After becoming music director for Phoenixville High School in 1934, Sample started a marching band that gained attention for innovative routines and high quality of performance. The W.S. Sample, Jr. film reels and scrapbooks of Phoenixville High School music, 1934-1955, document Sample's work with the Phoenixville High School music department. It includes about one dozen 16mm color and black and white film reels of performances and seven scrapbooks of photographs, programs and ephemera, clippings, and related materials.

Abstract:: The Musical Coterie of Wayne (Delaware County, Pennsylvania), established in 1911 and still active as of 2014, began as a women's choral group that performed in the homes of members. Its first public performance was held at the Saturday Club in Wayne in 1914, spawning the group's tradition of holding annual spring and winter concerts. In 1926, the group started the Junior Coterie as a means of fostering musical interest among children; in 1953 an orchestral section of the Coterie was formed, called the Coterie Strings. The Musical Coterie of Wayne (Pa.) records, 1911-2012, contain administrative, financial, and membership records, as well as scrapbooks, photographs, printed material, and other items documenting the group's history.
