Somerville Literary Society Collection of Autographs of Famous Women, 1848-1907 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Contains a collection of autographs of prominent women including Dorothea Dix, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lillie Devereux Blake, and Emily Sartain. The items were given to the Somerville Literary Society, a Swarthmore College women's literary organization, by Charles F. Jenkins to form the nucleus of an autograph collection. Most include a short published biography and portrait with a brief note from the subject. Exceptions are two letters from Elizabeth Cady Stanton. In one, she defends Mrs. Horace Greeley as a supporter of suffrage.

Abstract:: Contains two handwritten student publications created by early students at Swarthmore College. Star, Vol. 1#4, is dated 1874 and apparently compiled by several authors, with notes on campus life and comments. Three issues of The Sun Flower, 1877-1878, were probably created by men students in the Sciences. They include commentary on classes and student life and satiric drawings. This publication was a gift to Friends Historical Library in 1934 from Edward Martin, Class of 1878, a prominent Philadelphia surgeon. Class Paper of '79, a satiric collection of poems and prose edited by H. C. Field.

Amos Bacon Papers, 1795-1902 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Correspondence includes letters written by Amos W. Bacon of Philadelphia to his children, to Samuel W. Bacon from his father and brother while he was at Westtown School, and a love letter from Thomas Bacon to his future wife, Elizabeth Hall. Also contains the probate copy of the will of Charles West, Elizabeth Hall's copy book, the journal of Jane Wilson Bacon, and genealogical material on the entire family.

Clement family letters, 1857-1912 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Small collection of family correspondence that includes two letters that concern the Clements and Sharpless families' involvement in abolition activities. Contains a copy and typed transcript of a letter from William Lloyd Garrison Clement (1834-1889) to Gilbert Cope, historian of the Sharpless family, which describes events surrounding the formation of American Anti-Slavery Society and the Clement family's interaction with African-Americans living in the Mount Holly, N.J, area. The typed transcript includes information that a letter published by Cope from Charles B. Clement, brother of W. L. G. Clement, records different details. A letter of 1857 from Mary S. Clement to her son mentions a visit to New Jersey of African-American lecturer Frances Watkins Harper.

Swarthmore College Astronomy Department records, 1899-1986 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Swarthmore College offered its first elective course in Astronomy in the mid 1870's. In 1885, the Board reported a proposal to erect an observatory near the east end of the College property. After Professor Susan Cunningham retired in 1906, Dr. John A. Miller was appointed as Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy. Until 1952, courses were listed under the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy; a separate Department of Astronomy existed until it became the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the mid 1980's. Administrative files, departmental scrapbooks, correspondence, information on symposia and assemblies of the International Astonomical Union, and miscellaneous records. Includes substantial information on eclipses and extensive correspondence with astronomers throughout the world. Correspondants include: Margaret E. Powell, L.J. Mott Manuscripts, 1831-1898 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Lucretia Mott was a prominent Philadelphia Quaker minister and a leader in reform movements, especially antislavery, education, peace, and women's rights. She was born in 1793 in Nantucket, Mass., the daughter of Thomas and Anna Coffin, and educated at Nine Partners Boarding School in Dutchess Co., N.Y. In 1811, she married James Mott and they settled in Philadelphia, Pa. The Motts were active Hicksite Quakers, and Lucretia served as clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and traveled in the ministry. James Mott died in 1869, and Lucretia died in 1880. The bulk of the collection consists of material which was assembled at the time of the publication of Life and Letters by Anna Davis Hallowell in 1884. It includes original correspondence of Lucretia Mott and her husband, James M. Mott, with family and other reformers of their day. Also contains sermons, essays, and antislavery documents, and the diary of Lucretia Mott's trip to England to attend the World's Antislavery Convention of 1840.
