Abstract:
The Vaux family was deeply involved with Quaker and Native American affairs throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. George Vaux, Sr. was involved in Quaker activity through the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and other Quaker meetings throughout the world (including Antigua and London). Both George Vaux, Jr. and Mary Morris Vaux Walcott, his sister, served as commissioners for the U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners. This organization was established by the United States Congress in 1869 to watch over federal policies regarding Native Americans and to make certain that treaty obligations were fulfilled, especially in reference to supply deliveries. George Vaux, III also worked as the treasurer of the Indian Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Walter Hinchman portfolio, 1867-1873 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Walter Hinchman's portfolio of sketches and photographs includes the many of the plates used in his book, "Sketches & Poems." The sketches were done during Hinchman's time at a machine shop in Ohio at the end of the Civil War and on a survey trip (1867-1868) for a transcontinental railway from Kansas to California. There are sketches of the Pennsylvania Steel Company (1869), animals, flowers, trees, people, and landscapes.

Abstract:
Elijah Coffin's scrapbook includes his handwritten notes, typed materials, and published clippings. It features published materials on the history of westward expansion and pioneers, and the history of Indiana, as well as typed excerpts from a history of Kentucky (by Scudder), a history of Virginia (by Cooke), and Daniel Boone. In addition to material focusing on the history of the American West, the scrapbook includes excerpts from histories of Mesopotamia, Russia, Babylonia, Sumeria, Palestine, and Jerusalem.
