Abstract:
Elizabeth was a colonial era Quaker and prolific journal writer. Elizabeth's diaries are composed of her personal reflections of the day-to-day life of a wealthy Quaker woman in colonial Philadelphia. The majority of Elizabeth's entries detail her daily life, including social calls with other Quaker families and individuals, the births, deaths, and marriages within her community, and attendance at, and descriptions of, weekly and monthly Quaker meetings. Elizabeth's description of events during the American Revolutionary War include general military events, as well as personal experiences during the war.

Abstract:
This volume contains the collection of Joseph Scattergood of original and manuscript copies of documents relating to the Free Quakers, bound by his son George Scattergood. The Free Quakers disagreed with the strict disownment policy for members of the Society of Friends who fought in the Revolutionary War. Led by Samuel Wetherhill, this group wanted to practice Quakerism without the strict rules of discipline and disownment. The papers in Scattergood's collection include petitions, published editorials, accounts of prominent members of the Free Quakers and correspondence. Primary correspondents and writers include Samuel Wetherhill, Thomas Say, and others.

Abstract:
Most of the correspondence in this collection is addressed to Henry Drinker concerning trivial and more substantive matters of his business and that of the Society of Friends, including a letter from William Savery in 1794 from Canadagua describing a visit to the Oneidas. Also included are a document from the Philadelphia Committee to Joseph Elkinton in Tunesassah (1822) and a subscription list (1831) for J.J. Foster's publication on the New Jersey Crosswicks trial, signed by Roberts Vaux and others.

Abstract:
J.G. Rosengarten (1835-1921) was a Philadelphia lawyer, philanthropist, and history enthusiast with special interests in the role of German and French individuals in the development of and early wars of the United States. He wrote several books and articles on these subjects, and in the course of his research assembled the eponymous collection. The collection will likely be of interest to scholars, particularly those studying the American Revolutionary War and German involvement on both the British and American sides, and French and German foreign relations at the end of the 18th century.

Hopkinson and Dale family collection, 1779-1870 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Hopkinson and Dale families are tied to the colonial and early American history of the Mid-Atlantic, to the medical field, and to the University of Pennsylvania for at least four generations. The families joined when Edward Hopkinson (1850-1935) and Abigail Dale (1859-1887) married, probably in the early 1880s. This collection provides small glimpses into the lives of four generations of the families. Each individual is represented by only a few documents; however, this scant group of documents addresses important issues in early American politics, including George Clinton and Aaron Burr as vice presidential candidates and the Burr conspiracy; life as a sailor in the United States Navy in the 1820s; the Siege of Paris in 1870; and the importance of family.

Samuel Wetherill Correspondence, 1780-1816 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Samuel Wetherill (1736-1816), a Philadelphia manufacturer of cloth, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, was a birthright Quaker born in Burlington, N.J. During the Revolutionary War, he actively supported the military effort and was disowned from Philadelphia Monthly Meeting in 1779. In 1781, he, along with other disowned Quakers, founded an independent Quaker meeting, called the Society of Free Quakers. This collection contains correspondence primarily from another group of disowned Quakers from Sandwich Monthly Meeting in Massachusetts. This New England group was centered on Timothy Davis (1730-1798), a respected Friend and minister, who published a pamphlet in 1776 concerning the payment of taxes to the new government. He was disowned in 1778. The collection includes business and personal letters as well as those which deal directly with the cause of the Free Quakers.
