Samuel Wetherill Correspondence, 1780-1816 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Samuel Wetherill (1736-1816), a Philadelphia manufacturer of cloth, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, was a birthright Quaker born in Burlington, N.J. During the Revolutionary War, he actively supported the military effort and was disowned from Philadelphia Monthly Meeting in 1779. In 1781, he, along with other disowned Quakers, founded an independent Quaker meeting, called the Society of Free Quakers. This collection contains correspondence primarily from another group of disowned Quakers from Sandwich Monthly Meeting in Massachusetts. This New England group was centered on Timothy Davis (1730-1798), a respected Friend and minister, who published a pamphlet in 1776 concerning the payment of taxes to the new government. He was disowned in 1778. The collection includes business and personal letters as well as those which deal directly with the cause of the Free Quakers. Henry and Elizabeth Drinker letters, 1777-1778 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Correspondence between Henry Drinker and Elizabeth, his wife, relates to his arrest, imprisonment, and resulting forced exile to Winchester, Virginia during the American Revolution. His letters discuss his physical and spiritual well-being, concern for his children, news of other exiled Friends, and efforts to present their case before Pennsylvanian and Virginian authorities. Elizabeth Drinker's letters to her husband relate family and neighborhood news, Friends' visits, efforts on behalf of the exiles, and her constant concern for her husband.

John Ewer letters, 1772-1776 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Letters of John Ewer, located in London, to Owen Biddle (1737-1799), located in Philadelphia. Ewer was supplying Biddle, a Philadelphian merchant, with fabric of various kinds and patterns. Most of the letters deal with the shipping of this merchandise to Biddle and its payment. There are references to the increasing difficulties between Great Britain and the British colonies that would become the United States in Ewer's letters of 1775-1776.

Edward Smedley diary, 1863

Abstract:: This collection is comprised of the two folders of materials related to a group of Quakers exiled in Virigina during the American Revolutionary War, from 1777 to 1778. The collection includes originals, photocopies, and transcripts of the materials. The materials are largely composed of correspondence, but also include decisions made by Congress, financial records of the exiles, and a single photograph of the Isaac Brown house, where Quaker exiles were held in Virginia in 1777. Includes a letter from John Hancock, 1777. The collection also includes a partial index of the materials.

Abstract:: This volume contains the collection of Joseph Scattergood of original and manuscript copies of documents relating to the Free Quakers, bound by his son George Scattergood. The Free Quakers disagreed with the strict disownment policy for members of the Society of Friends who fought in the Revolutionary War. Led by Samuel Wetherhill, this group wanted to practice Quakerism without the strict rules of discipline and disownment. The papers in Scattergood's collection include petitions, published editorials, accounts of prominent members of the Free Quakers and correspondence. Primary correspondents and writers include Samuel Wetherhill, Thomas Say, and others.

Abstract:: Most of the correspondence in this collection is addressed to Henry Drinker concerning trivial and more substantive matters of his business and that of the Society of Friends, including a letter from William Savery in 1794 from Canadagua describing a visit to the Oneidas. Also included are a document from the Philadelphia Committee to Joseph Elkinton in Tunesassah (1822) and a subscription list (1831) for J.J. Foster's publication on the New Jersey Crosswicks trial, signed by Roberts Vaux and others.
