American Law Institute Third Restatement of the Law records, 1973-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The American Law Institute (ALI) was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American law. Former Penn Law Dean William Draper Lewis was the Institute's first director, running the organization's operations out of his campus office. The ALI was conceived as a representative gathering of the American Bar (including Judges, Lawyers, and Law Professors) for the stated mission "to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaptation to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work." The Third Restatement of the Law covered subjects including Foreign Relations Law and the Law Governing Lawyers. The collection, 1973-2003, includes drafts, comments, correspondence, and other materials related to the Third Restatement of the Law, which sought to improve and expand upon the first and second codification projects by the American Law Institute.

John Cobb Cooper Records, 1946-1967 (inclusive)

Abstract:
John Cobb Cooper, Jr., a prolific writer in international air and space law, was born on September 18, 1887 in Jacksonville, Florida. Cooper received his A.B. from Princeton University in 1909 and was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1911. Cooper married Martha Helen Marvel in 1918 and the couple had three children. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1917-1921 and held the rank of lieutenant and eventually Lieutenant-Commander. After being relieved from active service with the U.S. Navy, Cooper's embarked on a career that eventually led him to publish and present numerous articles on international air and space law. Nearing the end of his life in 1966, Cooper specifically selected 54 of his published articles on air and space law in hopes to be included in the Anna and Jonas Berger Memorial Space Law Collection at Biddle Law Library. Louis Henkin papers (Restatement of Torts, Third: Foreign Relations Law of the United States), 1973-1990 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Louis Henkin (1917-2010) was the Harlan Fiske Stone Professor of Constitutional Law, a position he held until he was designated University Professor in 1981. Henkin served as Chief Reporter for the Restatement of the American Law Institute's Restatement of the Foreign Relations Law of the United States (Third), a revision of the earlier Restatement and dealing with international law as it applies to the United States. The collection, 1973-1990, includes correspondence and related material compiled by Henkin during his appointment as Chief Reporter for the Restatement of the Law, Third: Foreign Relations Law of the United States.

The Second Restatement of the Law was an update to the American Law Institute's initial project, the First Restatement of the Law. The project secured initial funding through a Mellon grant in 1952 and was completed in 1988.
