- James Garrett Vail (1886-1951) was an American Quaker and industrial chemist with a focus on silicates. Vail frequently engaged in service missions outside of the United States, beginning with child-feeding efforts in Germany in combination with the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) after the First World War. This collections consists primarily of correspondence with his wife, Ruth Masters Russell Vail, while abroad and material related to those foreign missions and other aspects of his life.
