Abstract:: The Childs and Moon families were long-time residents of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Nicholas Lewarne Childs (1940-2009) taught history and Asian studies in private secondary schools in New Jersey, Iran, and Singapore. The bulk of the Childs family papers, 1818-1991, relate to Nicholas L. Childs and date from about 1965 to 1991, but there are also older materials from Louis M. Childs II, Nicholas L. Moon, Jacob Childs, Lizzy Orchard, and other Childs and Moon family members. The collection is comprised of correspondence, travel journals, travel ephemera, lecture notes and slides, photographs, genealogical research, legal documents, vital records, and other miscellaneous papers.

Abstract:: The Historical Society of Montgomery County scrapbooks collection, 1839-1982, consists primarily of scrapbooks compiled by various individuals, along with some compiled by HSMC staff and volunteers. The majority have a local focus and consist primarily of newspaper clippings. There are scrapbooks devoted to prominent local citizens, nearby regions, or national events; and there are also numerous scrapbooks by named individuals with items of personal interest.

Abstract:: The Philadelphia, Germantown and Norristown Rail Road Company, one of the first railroads in the Philadelphia area, was incorporated in 1831 and liquidated in the late 1970s. The PG&N became part of the Reading Railroad system under lease in 1869 and became the Reading's primary entrance for passenger trains into Philadelphia. The Philadelphia, Germantown, and Norristown Rail Road Company records, 1831-1981, include executive business records, financial records, and stock records. There are also materials relating to property and depots owned by PG&N, and records from subsidiary and other rail companies.

Abstract:: Winfield S. Hancock (1824-1886) was a decorated Union General in the Civil War, and a native of Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The Historical Society of Montgomery County Winfield S. Hancock collection, 1841-1995, includes papers from Winfield S. Hancock and his family members, as well as more recent materials relating to Hancock's tomb. The papers directly stemming from Winfield S. Hancock include letters and account books, and were primarily collected by Gen. Hancock's friend and attorney Benjamin E. Chain.

Abstract:: John S. Thompson (1902-1997) was a life-long resident of Norristown, Pennsylvania. After retirement, he earned college degrees and volunteered with the Christ Church United Church of Christ, Norristown State Hospital, and Boy Scouts of America. The John S. Thompson papers, 1907-1994, consist of two boxes of materials relating to family history, local music, and community involvement. There are also photographs, correspondence, and music programs from time periods throughout his life.

Abstract:: The Octave Club of Norristown was founded in 1916 as a women's chorus. The organization quickly expanded to include various other forms of music and education. The Octave Club of Norristown closed in 2009, but the Junior Octave Club was still active as of 2012. The Octave Club of Norristown records, 1921-1966, are comprised of administrative and financial records, as well as scrapbooks and ephemera.

Abstract:: Joseph Fornance (1804-1852) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Norristown, Pennsylvania. Like the elder Joseph, his son Joseph Fornance (1841-1923) and grandson Joseph Knox Fornance (1882-1965) were lawyers involved with politics. The Fornance family papers, 1794-1989, is an extensive collection of correspondence, ledgers, diaries, photograph albums, scrapbooks, and documents covering several generations of one family. Family members were involved in numerous matters over more than one-and-a-half centuries, so among other subjects, there is rich documentation of military service during the Civil War and World War I, the election of Woodrow Wilson, and early efforts at historic preservation (the Fornance family home is considered the oldest in Norristown).
