Abstract:: The Germantown Theatre Guild (GTG) in Philadelphia is one of the oldest small non-profit regional theatres in the country. Founded in 1933, the Theatre Guild continued (as of 2014) to operate out of the small carriage-house theatre and offices which are part of the historic residence built in 1742. The stage was the site of the first live televised theatre performance in the world in 1947. In 1970, the School District of Philadelphia built a theatre in the John B. Kelly school for the GTG to use for its Free Theatre for Children program. Known for years as “the theatre with a social conscience,” the GTG has had as its mission serving audiences that are out of the mainstream of the cultural experience, taking plays into rural communities, inner city schools, libraries, senior citizen and recreation centers, as well as prisons in three states. Abstract:: The Germantown Mennonite Church Corporation was established in 1947 to preserve the historic 1770 Mennonite Meeting House and burial grounds located in Germantown, a neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the mid-1990s, the Corporation changed its name to the Germantown Mennonite Historic Trust to distinguish itself from the Germantown Mennonite Church's congregation. As of 2015, the Germantown Mennonite Historic Trust continues to preserve its historic buildings and sites and interprets the history of Mennonites in Germantown from the 17th century to the present by holding programs, tours, and other events, and working with various other organizations in Germantown and elsewhere. Abstract:: Henry Cope purchased 40 acres of land in East Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1852 where he built a home for his growing family. Over the next 70 years, his descendants build 24 houses representing a variety of architectural styles. A portion of this land, now known as the Awbury Arboretum, was left to the City Parks Association in 1916 to protect it from development. The Awbury Arboretum Association records, 1868-2011, includes administrative records, financial records, and research compiled by Awbury Arboretum staff. There are also a large number of transcribed oral histories included in this collection.

Abstract:: Douglas H. Kane (circa 1947-2002) was a nationally renowned environmental architect and scholar who focused on ecologically-based design. As director of the Awbury Arboretum from 1978-1983, Kane developed a master plan for the arboretum's future growth. The Douglas Kane collection, 1960-2002 [bulk 1978-1983], contains administrative and ephemeral records created by Douglas H. Kane during his time as director of the Awbury Arboretum.

Abstract:: Upsala is a historic house located on Germantown Avenue in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Originally owned by members of the Johnson family, the facade and main part of the home were built in the 1790s. In 1944, the Upsala Foundation acquired ownership of the house and operated it at as a historic house museum. The Upsala Foundation was dissolved circa 2004-2005, and Cliveden, Inc. acquired the building and its contents. The Upsala Foundation records, 1773-2005 (bulk 1944-2005), consist of financial records, administrative records, programming and event materials, maintenance files, scrapbooks, and photographs that document Upsala and the Upsala Foundation.

Abstract:: Pat Henning (1933-2005) was a social activist and local historian who resided in the West Mount Airy section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Pat Henning papers, 1922-2004, are comprised of newspaper clippings, copies of primary materials, articles, pamphlets, and brochures. There is also a small amount of primary material in the collection, of which the majority is correspondence of Mrs. Francis A. Wister (1920s-1930s) and records of the Mount Airy Express.

Abstract:: Stenton is an historic site administered by The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania since 1899. James Logan erected this example of early Georgian architecture between 1723 and 1730 in what was countryside in Philadelphia County but is now part of the City of Philadelphia, near the neighborhood of Germantown. Logan had come to Philadelphia with William Penn in 1699 as his secretary, and for the rest of his life remained the Penn family’s representative in the colony and was at the center of Pennsylvania’s political life. The Colonial Dames Stenton records, 1898-2013, document the Dames administration of Stenton as an historic site.
