Abstract:
Germantown, a section of northwest Philadelphia, was settled in the late 1600s. It is well known as the site of the first American anti-slavery protest, the Revolutionary War Battle of Germantown, and the seat of the National government during the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. The Germantown Historical Society family files, 1864-2012, contains research relating to prominent or long established families in Germantown. It consists primarily of research notes and copies, although there is a small amount of original primary source material in the collection.

Abstract:
The Science and Art Club of Germantown is a social group in the Germantown section of Philadelphia that was founded in 1879. As of 2012, the group still met regularly to hear lectures on topics relating to science and the arts. The Science and Art Club of Germantown records, 1908-2008 (bulk 1960-2008) include attendance, membership, officers and address lists; minutes of presentations; event programs, menus, and invitations; a small amount of financial records and secretary's records; by-laws and printed pamphlets; and correspondence.

Germantown Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution records, 1898-1998 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is a service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism and American history that is open to any woman who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution. The DAR was founded in 1890, and a chapter in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia was established eight years later. The Germantown Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution records, 1898-1998, contain scrapbooks, administrative records, and pamphlets/ephemera. Scrapbooks dating from 1898 to 1978 make up the bulk of the collection.

Ray Shepherd files on Stenton, 1968-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Raymond V. Shepherd, Jr. studied the Stenton estate for his 1968 dissertation, James Logan's Stenton: Grand Simplicity in Quaker Philadelphia, for an M.A. in American Culture from the Winterthur Museum Program at the University of Delaware. The Ray Shepherd files on Stenton, 1968-2003, primarily consist of Shepherd's research materials and correspondence regarding Stenton and James Logan, although there are also some letters and documents that pertain to other 18th century historic sites. The bulk of materials are secondary-source, including historic site reports, articles, newspaper clippings, citations, and a large quantity of photographs of furniture and decorative objects.

Trinity-Chelten United Methodist Church records, 1891-2004 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Trinity-Chelten United Methodist Church in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia was established in 1970 as a merger of Chelten Avenue United Methodist Church (founded as Chelten Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church in 1886) and Trinity United Methodist Church (organized as Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church in 1900). The merged congregation met in the Chelten Avenue church building until it was discontinued in 2004. The Trinity-Chelten United Methodist Church records, 1891-2004, are largely composed of records from Chelten Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church, although some materials relate to Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church or the merged congregation. It includes Quarterly Conference records, trustee minutes, official board minutes, administrative board and council minutes, Charge Conference materials, membership and vital records (marriages, baptisms, funerals), and a small amount of financial documents, church histories, photographs, and other materials.

Colonial Dames Stenton records, 1898-2000 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Stenton is an historic site administered by The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania since 1899. James Logan erected this example of early Georgian architecture between 1723 and 1730 in what was countryside in Philadelphia County but is now part of the City of Philadelphia, near the neighborhood of Germantown. Logan had come to Philadelphia with William Penn in 1699 as his secretary, and for the rest of his life remained the Penn family’s representative in the colony and was at the center of Pennsylvania’s political life. The Colonial Dames Stenton records, 1898-2013, document the Dames administration of Stenton as an historic site. Henry Cope purchased 40 acres of land in East Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1852 where he built a home for his growing family. Over the next 70 years, his descendants build 24 houses representing a variety of architectural styles. A portion of this land, now known as the Awbury Arboretum, was left to the City Parks Association in 1916 to protect it from development. The Awbury Arboretum Association records, 1868-2011, includes administrative records, financial records, and research compiled by Awbury Arboretum staff. There are also a large number of transcribed oral histories included in this collection.

Douglas H. Kane (circa 1947-2002) was a nationally renowned environmental architect and scholar who focused on ecologically-based design. As director of the Awbury Arboretum from 1978-1983, Kane developed a master plan for the arboretum's future growth. The Douglas Kane collection, 1960-2002 [bulk 1978-1983], contains administrative and ephemeral records created by Douglas H. Kane during his time as director of the Awbury Arboretum.

Pat Henning (1933-2005) was a social activist and local historian who resided in the West Mount Airy section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Pat Henning papers, 1922-2004, are comprised of newspaper clippings, copies of primary materials, articles, pamphlets, and brochures. There is also a small amount of primary material in the collection, of which the majority is correspondence of Mrs. Francis A. Wister (1920s-1930s) and records of the Mount Airy Express.
