Abstract:
Henry Howard Houston (1820-1895) was a prominent Philadelphia businessman and philanthropist influential in the development of Chestnut Hill. After his death, he left a building and property in Chestnut Hill to the Philadelphia Cricket Club. The Sallie L. O. Smith Collection on the Henry H. Houston Estate, circa 1905-1996, includes correspondence and other materials concerning Philadelphia Cricket Club and the estate of Henry H. Houston.

Abstract:
The Germantown and Chestnut Hill Improvement Association was formed in 1906, and focused on issues affecting the 22nd Ward of Philadelphia--encompassing the neighborhoods of Germantown, Chestnut Hill, and Mount Airy. Its concerns included roads and sewers, zoning, and fire and police protection; it helped to bring new schools, elevated train crossings, and reliable trash pick-up to the area. The Germantown and Chestnut Hill Improvement Association records, 1906-1950, include minutes, annual reports, a scrapbook, correspondence, and newspaper clippings.

Abstract:
The lives of James and Mary Bond, a Philadelphia ornithologist and author, respectively, were altered the day that author Ian Fleming, a bird lover who was familiar with Bond’s book, “The Birds of the West Indies,” appropriated James Bond’s name for his fictional spy character. The resulting confusion prompted Mary Wickham Bond to write “How 007 Got His Name,” in 1966, in which she tells the story of the real James Bond. This collection consists of Mary Wickham Bond’s collection of information regarding her husband, her own works on the writing, publishing and promoting of her books about her husband, and David Contosta’s writings about her husband.

Woodmere Art Museum, located in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was officially established in 1940 through the will of Philadelphia businessman, civic leader, and art collector, Charles Knox Smith (1845-1916) and is dedicated to Philadelphia-area artists. The building, grounds, and core of the museum's permanent collection were gifts of Smith, who purchased the Woodmere estate in 1898 and renovated it to better display his collection. As of 2016, Woodmere Art Museum boasts a number of indoor and outdoor spaces, in which it hosts various exhibitions, programs, art classes, lectures, performances, and other special events throughout the year.
