Abstract:: Tinicum Marsh (in Philadelphia and Delaware Counties), the largest remaining freshwater tidal wetland Pennsylvania, is preserved as the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. When the area was threatened in 1969 by construction plans for Interstate 95, public and private groups rallied to save the land. In 1972, the Tinicum National Environmental Center was established by United States Department of the Interior. The Tinicum National Environmental Center records, 1970-1987, consist largely of reports relating to environmental preservation in Tinicum and wetland preservation, as well as related correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, brochures, and financial papers.

Abstract:: M. Rosalie Dryden Peirsol (1913-2005), a long-time resident of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, was a dedicated civic and environmental activist. During the 1970s and 1980s, Peirsol was one of the lead players responsible for compelling the local government to implement a county-wide recycling program in Delaware County, Pa. The Rosalie Peirsol collection on implementing recycling in Delaware County, Pa., 1973-1990, consists of materials created and collected by Rosalie Peirsol. The major organizations that are represented in the collection include Delaware County Recycling Advisory Committee, Delaware County Solid Waste Advisory Committee, and Recycling Into Cash and Energy (RICE).
