Abstract:
Pierre Eugène Du Simitière (1737-1784) was a collector, artist, and historian, who opened the first public museum, the American Museum, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the American Musuem, Du Simitière presented his many materials collected during his travels and from his collections. The Library Company of Philadelphia purchased many of the manuscript materials at an auction in 1785 following Du Simitière’s death and the closing of the American Museum. The following collection is Du Simitière’s manuscript collection purchased at this auction. The collection reflects his interests and his lifestyle and includes poetry, sketches, watercolors, newspaper excerpts and clippings, treatise, correspondence, lists of nature, historical chronologies, bibliographies, and copies and originals of historical documents. Library Company of Philadelphia minute books, 1731-2000 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1731, Benjamin Franklin and a group of intellectual Philadelphians established the Library Company of Philadelphia, a subscription library supported by its shareholders. The Library Company flourished because it adopted a purchasing policy responsive to the needs of its intellectually alert, economically ambitious, but non-elite membership. The Library Company of Philadelphia is now an independent research library specializing in American society and culture from the 17th to 19th centuries. The history of this organization is best documented by its minute books dating from 1731 to 2000. The collection consists of minute books documenting the meetings of the Directors (both the final approved version of the minutes and the rough drafts of the minutes), 1731 to 2000; the Trustees of the Loganian Library, 1853 to 1876; and the Committee for Fixing the Value of Lost Books, 1785 to 1848. Abstract:
The Stevens-Cogdell-Sanders-Venning family papers document the development of a white family and a prominent middle-class African American family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, beginning with the 1760s emigration of John Stevens from England to South Carolina. The materials date from 1734 to 1982 and consist of scrapbooks, ephemera, newspaper clippings, Common Prayer books, invitations, holiday cards, correspondence, business papers, and a variety of personal papers. The materials document the Stevens-Cogdell-Sanders-Venning families’ professional, family, and personal lives as well as the development of a prominent middle-class African American family.

Abstract:
Samuel X Radbill (1901-1987) began his medical career as a general practitioner in 1926 and became a pediatrician in 1938, when he was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. Radbill was perhaps better known as a medical historian, and collector of bookplates and old and rare medical texts than as a pediatrician. He believed that the study of medicine’s past was useful to its practice, and he encouraged many of his professional colleagues to examine the history of their specialties. The Samuel X Radbill papers evidences Radbill’s deep and unrelenting interest in the history of medicine, particularly the history of pediatrics and dermatology, folklore, ancient medicine, medical art and medical bookplates. College of Physicians Early Records, 1788-1847, 1889, 2001

Abstract:
The College of Physicians Early Records collection documents some of the College of Physician’s earliest activities, including attempts by Fellows to diagnose and treat the 1793 yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. The collection, which was discovered by chance in 2001 by College foreman Leroy Green, contains letters, manuscripts, and committee reports. Founded in 1787, the College assembled prominent Philadelphia physicians “to advance the science of medicine and to thereby lessen human misery." The first Fellows of the College included Abraham Chouvet, Gerard Clarkson, Samuel Duffield, James Hutchinson, George Glentworth, Adam Kuhn, John Morgan, Thomas Parke, Benjamin Rush, and William Shippen Jr., almost all of whom are represented in this collection. Benjamin Rush letter to John Morgan, 1768 July 27

Abstract:
Benjamin Rush, Philadelphia physician, was born in 1745 near Philadelphia. He received his M.D. from the University of Edinburgh in 1768. Rush was a founding Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He died in 1813. John Morgan was born in Philadelphia in 1735. He earned his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1763. Morgan was a founding Fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and a co-founder of the Medical College at the University of Pennsylvania, the first medical school in colonial America. This small collection consists of one letter from Benjamin Rush to John Morgan, dated Edinburgh, July 27, 1768. The topics of the letter include lectures attended by Rush and his thesis.

Yogaratnakara, circa 1750

Abstract:
Book manuscript, written about 1750 in Pali-Sinhalese on the prepared leaves of a talipot palm. It is a copy of the famous work on Sinhalese medicine originally compiled several centuries before. The painted wooden covers and ivory medallion decorated with the sacred bo tree symbols are old, but the binding cord is modern after an early type by a native artist. Item was donated with a contemporary stylus of the type that could have been used to write the text on the palm leaves. (Museum catalog number 961-MISC) Reference: Wade, Ella.
