Abstract:
John Ericsson (1803-1889) was an inventor and engineer best known for designing the USS Monitor and innovating propeller-driven boats. The USS Monitor, an ironclad warship, contributed to the Union victory in the Civil War; one of Ericsson's other ships was the first propeller-driven steamer to cross the Atlantic. The American Swedish Historical Museum John Ericsson collection, 1838-1938, encompasses correspondence, financial records, plans and drawings, patents and contracts, scrapbooks, and photographs. It is an invaluable resource for the study of the Civil War, mechanical engineering, famous Swedes in America, and numerous other topics.

Craven Hall Historical Society records, 1978-2013 (bulk) 1900-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Craven Hall Historical Society, previously the Citizens for the Preservation of Craven Hall, was organized in Warminster Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1978. Today the organization owns and operates both Craven Hall, a Federal/Greek Revival home built in stages between 1790 and 1845 that is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the John Fitch Steamboat Museum, dedicated to the inventor of the world's first commercial steamboat. The Craven Hall Historical Society records, 1900-2013 (bulk 1978-2013), contain materials relating to the restoration of Craven Hall and the construction of the John Fitch Museum as well as general Historical Society records. In addition to records created by the Historical Society, this collection includes research materials compiled by the Historical Society on Craven Hall and John Fitch.

A collection that focuses on two dates: 1862 & 1942. In the former, Lewis W. Leeds' invention of the window envelope is detailed with contracts, bills, correspondence and samples of the envelope. In 1942, his descendant, Morris E. Leeds corresponds with E. Tudor Gross who has become interested in the invention and ends with the article entitled "The Window Envelope," which appeared in the Collector's Club Philatelist in April of that year.

Founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1824, in honor of America's first scientist, Benjamin Franklin, The Franklin Institute is one of the oldest and most significant science institutes in the nation. Henry R. Heyl papers, 1876-1917 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Henry Renno Heyl (1842-1919) was an inventor active in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Heyl was a longtime member of The Franklin Institute and is best known for creating the phasmatrope, an early simulation of moving pictures, and receiving the first United States patent for a stapler. Henry R. Heyl papers, 1876-1917, consist of numerous patents, drawings and explanations of Heyl's inventions. There is a large amount of materials pertaining to his paper milk bottle and wire book sewing machine inventions. Also included are some photographs and a glass plate negative, a scrapbook, correspondence, graphs, diagrams and blueprints, notes, reports, notebooks, manuals, and books.

Percy David Hedderwick (1849-1920) was a Scottish engineer and inventor who patented an advanced rotary printing press in 1870 in addition to holding patents No. 1581 and 1958 for improvements to printing machinery such as automatic stopping and an apparatus for counting paper in the machines. This collection documents his efforts to patent his inventions and introduce them into the market.
