Abstract:: Journals, reports, and surveys written by Harold Chance documenting his visits to and continuing relationships as an AFSC staff member with Evangelical Friends meetings, mostly in the western United States. The collection includes nine journals, 1949-1956, Friends Peace Service evaluation surveys, 1956 & n.d., and a number of miscellaneous reports to Friends Peace Service Council. Among the former is a report on the Second American Conference of Evangelical Friends (1950) and one on the Student Conference on Peace and International Relations (1955).

Clement family letters, 1857-1912 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Small collection of family correspondence that includes two letters that concern the Clements and Sharpless families' involvement in abolition activities. Contains a copy and typed transcript of a letter from William Lloyd Garrison Clement (1834-1889) to Gilbert Cope, historian of the Sharpless family, which describes events surrounding the formation of American Anti-Slavery Society and the Clement family's interaction with African-Americans living in the Mount Holly, N.J, area. The typed transcript includes information that a letter published by Cope from Charles B. Clement, brother of W. L. G. Clement, records different details. A letter of 1857 from Mary S. Clement to her son mentions a visit to New Jersey of African-American lecturer Frances Watkins Harper.

Josiah P. Marvel papers, 1942-1966 (bulk)

Abstract:: Josiah P. Marvel (1896-1959) was a Quaker, who worked with the American Friends Service Committee in France in 1940-41 and in 1942 became the chairman of the Quaker Emergency Service in New York City. This collection contains primarily Marvel's files on the Quaker Emergency Service, including its Civilian Readjustment Committee (a clinic that offered men arrested for soliciting sex with other men the option of psychiatric care in lieu of a prison sentence). The collection also includes a typescript of Marvel's unpublished memoir, "Peace in our time," and photographs of him.

Abstract:: This collection consists of audiocassette tapes of interviews created by Darwin H. and Donna Heckman Stapleton from 1991 to 1999 as research for their 2004 biography, Dignity, Discourse, and Destiny: The Life of Courtney C. Smith. Interviews were conducted with Swarthmore College faculty, staff, students, and Board members, as well as personal friends and family members of Courtney Smith. Courtney Smith (1916-1969) was the 9th president of Swarthmore College, 1953-1969. While a time of great growth and accomplishment, his presidency was marked by increasing tension from anti-war sentiment, pressure to increase the number of African American students, and changing social standards.

Swarthmore College Astronomy Department records, 1899-1986 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Swarthmore College offered its first elective course in Astronomy in the mid 1870's. In 1885, the Board reported a proposal to erect an observatory near the east end of the College property. After Professor Susan Cunningham retired in 1906, Dr. John A. Miller was appointed as Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy. Until 1952, courses were listed under the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy; a separate Department of Astronomy existed until it became the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the mid 1980's. Administrative files, departmental scrapbooks, correspondence, information on symposia and assemblies of the International Astonomical Union, and miscellaneous records. Includes substantial information on eclipses and extensive correspondence with astronomers throughout the world. Correspondants include: Margaret E. Powell, L.J. Robert Bryan Michener and Edith Riner Michener. Kenya correspondence, 1930-1970 (bulk) 1920-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains the correspondence of Robert Bryan Michener and Edith Riner Michener written while serving as Quaker missionaries in Kenya, East Africa, in the 1930s. Working under the auspices of the American Friends African Mission, a program of the Five Years Meeting, R. Bryan Michener served as a physician at the hospital in Kaimosi and then principal of the Boys' School. Edith Michener first taught English at the Boys' School and then organized the Girls' Boarding School. Their correspondence, photocopies and some originals, is mainly addressed to family members in Kansas and American Friends Board of Missions. It provides insight into their professional and personal lives in East Africa as well as the tensions within the mission system and colonial Africa of the period.
