Lucy T. Shoe Meritt papers, 1888-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Lucy T. Shoe Meritt (1906- 2003) was an acclaimed archaeologist, scholar, teacher and editor who received her B.A, M.A, and Ph.D degrees from Bryn Mawr. During her life time, Shoe Meritt taught at Mount Holyoke College and the University of Texas at Austin, was a fellow at the American Academy of Rome, and served as the Editor of Publications for the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Additionally, she was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study and the American Institute of Archaeology. She received the Gold Medal of the Archaeological Institute of America for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement in 1976. The collection is largely comprised of Shoe Meritt's correspondence with her family and notable scholars who were her contemporaries. It also includes diaries, publications, academic and professional papers, as well as photographs, postcards and scrapbooks.

Bucks County Justice Center plans, 1998-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The 2008 decision to build a new Bucks County Justice Center in Doylestown, Pennsylvania was controversial. A new parking garage was built from 2008 to 2010, and construction for the new courthouse began in 2011. The Bucks County Justice Center plans, 1998-2013, include reports, correspondence, site plans, newspaper clippings, photographs, resolutions, and other documents relative to planning the construction of the justice center.

Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation blueprints collection, 1890-2007 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Glen Foerd estate was built circa 1850 by Charles Macalester and was later purchased by Robert H. Foerderer, Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives and leather manufacturer. His daughter, art collector Florence Tonner, bequeathed Glen Foerd to the Lutheran Church of America with the caveat that the estate would revert to public ownership if the Lutheran Church was unable to care for it. That happened in 1988, and the Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation was established as a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of Glen Foerd. There are about 40 unique blueprints, plus some duplicates, in the Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation blueprints collection, 1890-2007. Most depict renovations of the Glen Foerd estate, 1933-2007, but there are also some blueprints of other properties, 1890-1938.

Glass plate negatives of Frank Taylor drawings, circa 1860-1926

Abstract:: Frank Hamilton Taylor (1846-1927) owned a lithography firm and served as a special artist for various newspapers and publications in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He wrote for several guidebooks and publications, but is best known for his drawings of Philadelphia published as Ever-Changing Philadelphia and Old Philadelphia in the 1910s. The Glass plate negatives of Frank Taylor drawings, circa 1860-1926, consist of nearly 250 full-plate glass negatives of sketches drawn by Taylor, mostly of building exteriors and street scenes in Philadelphia, with some sites in nearby areas.

Abstract:: Benjamin Ridgway Evans was an artist and draftsman active in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the mid- to late 19th century known for producing watercolors of the city's buildings and streets. The Benjamin Ridgway Evans prints, circa 1849-1890, consist of 125 artworks, mostly prints of drawings, but also a few watercolors, showing detailed views of buildings and streets in Philadelphia.

Springfield Township Historical Society Whitemarsh Hall collection, 1916-1992 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Whitemarsh Hall, located in Springfield Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, was the home of Eva and Edward Stotesbury. The estate was designed by Horace Trumbauer and constructed from 1916-1920. It was converted to laboratories and briefly used by Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Company before it was abandoned and finally demolished in 1980. The Springfield Township Historical Society Whitemarsh Hall collection, 1916-1992, is comprised of photographs, research notes, scholarly articles, and newspaper clippings relating to Whitemarsh Hall.

George Nakashima papers, circa 1907-2006

Abstract:: George Nakashima (1905-1990) was an American architect and furniture designer and maker, often referred to as one of the fathers of the American craft movement. After being interned during World War II, Nakashima moved to New Hope, Bucks County, Pennsylvania and set up a woodworking studio. Between the 1950s and 1980s, Nakashima's furniture was in high demand; he had exhibitions all over the world and pieces were purchased and displayed in museums. George Nakashima papers, circa 1907-2000s, consist of letters, business records, sketches, handwritten notes, architectural drawings, photographs, catalogs, awards, subject files, printed material relating mostly to Nakashima's work as a furniture designer, artwork from Nakashima's personal collection, tools, and other materials documenting Nakashima's professional and personal life. Abstract:: The township of Lower Merion in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania was first settled by Welsh Quakers in 1682. It is part of the "Main Line," a collection of affluent Philadelphia suburbs located alongside the Pennsylvania Railroad line that was built between Philadelphia and Harrisburg in the mid-19th century. The Main Line Country Houses Collection, circa 1900-2003, consists of over 800 photographs and fact sheets on over 150 properties. The materials were collected by William Alan Morrison for his 2002 book The Main Line: Country Houses of Philadelphia's Storied Suburb, 1870-1930.
