Abstract:

Nathan Smith (1762-1829) was a prominent physician who spent much of his career in Hanover, New Hampshire, and in New Haven, Connecticut, and was known for his skills as a surgeon, a teacher, a practitioner, and a politician. He founded the medical school at Dartmouth College and was involved in the foundation of the Medical School of Maine and the medical schools at Yale University and the University of Vermont. This volume contains "Catalog of the Medical Library" (pages 1-11), "Catalogue of Books in Nathan Smith's Library" (pages 13-19), several drafts of the "Introductory Lecture on the Progress of Medical Science" (pages 22-65), and "Catalogue of Nathan Smith's Library" (pages 67-89). There are no dates listed in the volume, but this volume probably dates from around 1796 until his death on January 26, 1829.

Benjamin Woolsey Dwight and Francis E. Dwight Papers, 1801-1882 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Between 1801 and 1803 Benjamin Woolsey Dwight studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he also practiced at Pennsylvania Hospital, and at Columbia College in New York. Francis E. Dwight was the grandson of Benjamin Woolsey Dwight. In 1882 he took medical instructions at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York, New York. The Benjamin Woolsey Dwight and Francis E. Dwight Papers contain material relating to their medical education - mainly notebooks for lectures attended, and admission cards for Benjamin Woolsey Dwight.

Samuel Bellet (1902-1971) was a Philadelphia cardiologist who had an active career as a teacher, researcher, and clinician and was considered a pioneer in the study of arrhythmias. This collection contains a small group of material relating to his career and his involvement in the medical community in Philadelphia, as well as in the United States and in Israel.
