Shigezo and Sonoko Iwata papers, 1942-1991

Abstract:
Shigezo Iwata was born in Japan and immigrated to the United States in 1924. Sonoko U. Iwata was born in Los Angeles. The couple made their home in Thermal, California where they farmed and Shigezo was secretary of the Thermal Farmers' Cooperative Association. Separated in the initial part of World War II when Shigezo was arrested and detained by the FBI at the Lordsburg Internment Camp (New Mexico), the Iwatas were reunited in 1943 at the Colorado River Relocation Center near Poston, Arizona. The collection contains letters between the Iwatas and their friends detailing life in the relocation center and the internment camp. There are also personal documents and biographical materials.

Consists of envelopes both used and unused (also known as covers), letters, postcards, documents, postage stamps, and a variety of other philatelic material from around the world as collected and annotated by the Reverend William Hogarth Tower (1871-1950). The collection spans the topics of English Postal History, United States Postal History, War Covers, Philatelic Miscellany, and Franking.

This volume includes fukuro 袋 for 122 ehon 絵本 (illustrated books), 12 sugoroku 双六 (board games), and 4 maps, pasted onto pages in apparently no order. The fukuro are wrappers for printed material and are often heavily illustrated with images and/or text.

Yamanaka family photograph collection, circa 1910-1925 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Yamanakas arrived in California prior to 1910, and lived on Railroad Avenue in San Francisco before moving to Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago a decade later. The Yamanaka family photograph collection comprises 312 loose photographs, including photo postcards, of the Yamanaka family, friends, and their community in California during the 1910s-1920s. Included are a number of studio portraits as well as portraits of activities in the Bay Area, Japan, and other areas in the Americas.

Collection of Documents Related to the Incarceration of Japanese Americans at Tule Lake Relocation Center, 1941-1945 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Consists of a collection of thirty-one miscellaneous documents concerning the incarceration of Japanese Americans by the United States government during World War II at the Tule Lake Relocation Center (later Tule Lake Segregation Center) and other American concentration camps. Most of the materials in this collection relate to a 1943 loyalty questionnaire and the resulting segregation at Tule Lake of those labeled as "disloyal," which led to thousands of incarcerated Japanese Americans deciding to renounce their U.S. citizenship and apply for repatriation to Japan. Materials document resistance efforts by organized groups, such as Sokuji Kikoku Hoshi-dan, as well as individual acts of resistance by incarcerees.

This collection is comprised of a series of oversized, handmade books on the history of Japanese art. In addition to text and notations, the books contain both color and black-and-white full-page illustrations by numerous Japanese artists. The books seem to run in a number of separate series within the collection, and are written entirely in Japanese.

Japanese machine gunner's photograph album, circa 1937

Abstract:
In 1937 Japan invaded the Republic of China, setting in motion the Second Sino-Japanese War, the largest Asian war in the 20th century and the beginning of the larger Pacific War (the Asian theater of World War II). This album contains photographs taken by a heavy machine gunner in the Japanese Imperial Army during the Second Sino-Japanese war. The photographs include posed group shots from army training, less formal group shots taken in the field, and is especially notable for its action shots from the battlefield, as well as candid photographs of military travel and camp life.

Japanese naval officer photograph album relating to the "Second Shanghai Incident", 1932-1939 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1937 Japan invaded the Republic of China, setting in motion the Second Sino-Japanese War, the largest Asian war in the 20th century and the beginning of the larger Pacific War (the Asian theater of World War II). This album contains photographs taken by a warrant officer in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Many of photographs depict the officer at various stages in his career. There are also shots of friends and family, with men in military uniform and women in formal attire. Dating and signage suggests the action shots pertain to the Battle of Shanghai in 1937.
