Abstract:

Gaspard-Félix Tournachon (1820–1910[1]), known by the pseudonym Nadar, was a French photographer, caricaturist, journalist, novelist, and balloonist. This collection consists of an album kept by Nadar at his art and photography studios in which his sitters were asked to sign. The 400 names found in the album comprise notables in the worlds of art, literature, music, dance, theater, and government. The majority of signatures are accompanied by examples of the artist's trade--such as a drawing, a poem, bars of music--or some greeting or observation.
