Abstract:
The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company was a prominent coal mining and shipping company first established in 1820 with the merger of the Lehigh Coal Mining Company and the Lehigh Navigation Company, both of which operated in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania beginning in 1818. The Company owned and operated an extensive system of coalmines in Pennsylvania’s Carbon and Schuylkill Counties, two canals, and several railroads and railways. The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company is credited with shaping the course of the American industrial revolution in Pennsylvania, as it contributed to innovation in transportation, manufacturing, and use of natural resources. The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company records house the business records of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company. Philadelphia Surveyor John H. Levering Ledger, 1873-1888 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This folio itemizes an interesting view into the northwestward expansion of the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in an era of growth in the mid-19th century. What is shown by the surveying entries is the incorporation, by the 1854 Act of Consolidation, of Roxborough Township and the Borough of Manayunk into the City of Philadelphia's 21st Ward. A list of landowners requiring surveying services reflects on Lehigh University's collection of 18th and 19th century industrial collections with client names such as Wetherill, Packer, Reading Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad and the Schuylkill Navigation System. Also, a surprisingly large list of women landowners is displayed within the ledger entries.

Newspaper Caricatures about the Henry Ward Beecher Trial, 1853-1893 (inclusive)

Abstract:
A selective collection of newspaper caricatures, cartoons, sketches and portraits of the Beecher family especially related to the scandalous adultery trial in 1875 involving the Reverend Henry Ward Beecher and Mrs. Elizabeth Tilton. Beecher was the younger brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." The entire Beecher family was involved in the abolition cause. The collection of illustrations bound in this volume are an interesting evidence of the public opinion of the era.

Blanche Fiscus Greaves papers, 1886-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Blanche Fiscus Greaves (b.1869, d.1958) graduated in the class of 1895 at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania. After attending medical school, she was employed at the Emergency Hospital, and was apparently the first female to serve on the staff of the Dorthea Dix Hospital and Woman's Hospital, all in Washington DC. She joined the staff of the Hospital of the Woman's Medical College in 1899 and apparently worked there until her retirement, practicing medicine for 40 years in Philadelphia. For a brief period, Greaves was appointed a temporary physician in the treatment of influenza and pneumonia during the epidemic in 1918. The collection materials span the years 1886-1955. The bulk of this collection is photographs, and primarily studio portraits. Some individuals in these photographs are identified but many are not. Longshore family papers, 1819-1902 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Longshore family was active in Philadelphia medicine in the 19th century and the Longshore family papers includes material from Thomas Longshore, his brother Joseph Longshore, and his wife Hannah E. Myers Longshore. Thomas Longshore was a teacher and a supporter of women's education and social reform, especially abolition. Joseph Longshore (1809-1879) was a physician who supported women in acquiring quality medical education. He was active in founding the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania and later, the Penn Medical University in Philadelphia. Hannah E. Myers Longshore, M.D. (1819-1901), enrolled in and graduated from the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania’s first class in 1851 and became Philadelphia’s first female physician in private practice. She lectured extensively first at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania and then at the Pennsylvania Medical University. Lida Poynter collection on Dr. Mary E. Walker, circa 1850-1946

Abstract:
The Lida Poynter collection on Dr. Mary E. Walker consists of Poynter’s unpublished manuscript and research notes on the life of Dr. Mary E. Walker. Mary E. Walker (1832-1919) was a physician who served as a surgeon during the Civil War. She was awarded the Medal of Honor for her service and remains the only woman to have received the Medal. Throughout her life, she wrote, lectured and taught on medicine, dress reform, suffrage, and women’s rights, in general. In addition to Poynter's manuscript and research notes, this collection features correspondence to and from Mary Walker, correspondence to and from Lida Poynter, and photographs of Mary Walker.

Hatfield and Hibernia Park records, 1743-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The County of Chester owns the Hatfield and Hibernia estates, both of which played parts in the early iron industry in Pennsylvania. The families who lived on those estates (the Hatfields, Downings, Brookes and Swaynes, to name only a few) were involved with other ventures such as a general store and a convalescence home. The Hatfield and Hibernia Park records document the families, businesses, and property transfers of the families living in the Hatfield and Hibernia homes from the 1700s to the 1900s. Researchers interested in land and property records, iron works, 19th century general stores, and rest homes will find this collection to be extremely valuable.
